About Fort Logan:

Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Fort Logan (CMHHFL) is one of two state hospitals serving our community. The vision of CMHHFL is to provide the highest quality mental health services to persons with complex, serious, and persistent mental health illnesses within the resources available. Our mission is to support those individuals in achieving their recovery goals and reaching their full potential. CMHHFL provides inpatient treatment to adult patients, generally between the ages of 18- 59. The hospital has 138 adult inpatient beds, and six treatment units, four of which are civil and two are forensic. The two forensic units are dedicated to providing psychiatric stabilization and restoration treatment to individuals who are opined incompetent to proceed as a result of their mental illness. Medical services, o ccupational therapy, neuropsychological-rehabilitation services, and trauma-informed care services are available for all patients throughout the hospital.

Description of Job

This position will typically work early morning shifts, Monday - Friday.

Please note: These working arrangements are subject to change.

This position exists to provide professional laboratory services in Diagnostic Laboratory Medicine. The position is responsible for the pre-analytical and analytical waived testing phases of the laboratory and the future expansion of waived testing activities. The work supports laboratory initiatives by providing professional-level knowledge, skill, and testing services. In addition, the position is responsible for ensuring compliance with all accreditation standards; collection of blood and other specimens; analysis of specimen quality; clinical accession; specimen processing; education of clinical staff; record-keeping through manual and electronic methods; maintenance of internal quality control mechanisms, procurement of good and services; ordering of reagents and supplies; maintenance of equipment; and competency assessment of technical staff.

Primary Job Duties:

Clinical Laboratory Duties:

  • Analyze patient and quality control specimens by manual and automated methods of CLIA-waived testing.

  • Respond to physician inquiries and clarify doctor's orders

  • Determine sample or specimen acceptability based on criteria published in various policies, procedures, and reference materials

  • Assist the laboratory manager with clinical laboratory operations, including clinical supervision and guidance of subordinate laboratory staff.

  • Interpret the clinical significance and accuracy of various laboratory results and inform medical/nursing personnel.

  • In conjunction with the laboratory manager, serves as a laboratory subject matter expert, advocating and representing Fort Logan's interest and, when necessary, challenging external agency protocols when clinically/scientifically indicated.

  • Assist with management of the hospital's glucometer (blood glucose monitoring device) program, including equipment procurement, troubleshooting, completing calibrations including linearity testing, data management, training, and competency assessment for authorized users.

  • Provide clinical interpretation and guidance about test selection, specimen processing methods, troubleshooting, and quality control activities.

  • Interpret and comply with regulatory standards (Joint Commission, CLIA, Department of Health, etc.) and offer guidance and recommendations to departmental leadership for meeting and maintaining compliance.

  • Provide education and training to non-laboratory personnel (e.g., Nursing, Medical Staff) about laboratory test-related matters, clinical interpretation, test selection, etc.

• Identify operational efficiencies and reduce the frequency of repeated unnecessary venipunctures to the hospital's patients, making recommendations to the laboratory manager.

  • Receive, address, and direct inquiries from physicians, nursing staff, administrative staff, and external stakeholders.

  • Evaluate, investigate, and resolve issues or escalate to the laboratory manager or leadership for further evaluation.

  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment to ensure peak performance

  • Establishes clinical workflows.

  • Implement and monitor procedures related to TJC National Patient Safety Goals to ensure accurate patient identification, proper labeling of specimens, timely processing of routine laboratory test requests, and prompt response to emergency (STAT) specimen collection needs.

  • Provide clinical guidance and consultation to lower-level staff.

Quality Management and Laboratory Administrative Function:

  • Assists in developing, implementing, and maintaining the laboratory Quality Control and Quality Assurance Program.

  • Review and interpret test results and quality control data to determine the accuracy, precision, and reliability of patient data. Resolves QC/QA problems to ensure the highest quality of care is provided to patients. Analyzes and interprets quality control data daily for trends, shifts, or other necessary troubleshooting.

  • Interpret and follow Guidelines established by CLIA-88 and proficiency guidelines set by the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Assists laboratory manager in updating policies and procedures and offers guidance and feedback to hospital leadership to meet and maintain compliance.

  • Must meet all regulatory agency requirements mandated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), The Joint Commission (TJC), the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 (CLIA –88).

  • Review critical laboratory results, complete all necessary notifications, and update logs accordingly (e.g., Quality Management Director, patient unit, etc.)

  • Exercise a high level of sophistication with electronic systems such as the Laboratory Information System (LIS, electronic health record, referral laboratory systems, and device software). Completes LIS updates and test reconciliation.

  • Evaluate, recommend, and implement the use of new laboratory methods and equipment. Apply complex chemical and analytical theories when evaluating procedures. Perform comparative studies and analyze subsequent data to ensure the reliability of newly employed methods/equipment.

  • Maintain meticulously organized records (laboratory requisitions, reports, invoices, temperature logs, etc.).

  • Ensure the uninterrupted availability of laboratory supplies by tracking quantities and out-dates and replenishing inventory.

Clinical supervision of subordinate staff and phlebotomy duties:

  • Clinically supervise, evaluate, and guide subordinate laboratory employees (e.g., phlebotomists, medical assistants, etc.) on laboratory matters to ensure high-quality laboratory results during shifts. Provides oversight and direction to ensure accurate data entry, efficient and accurate document retrieval, and high-quality pre-analytical processes. Serves as a ready resource to address questions related to basic laboratory procedures, specimen collection requirements, supplies and materials, etc.

  • Collect quality blood specimens by venipuncture.

  • Evaluate workflow and workload; make changes based on clinical priorities.

  • Prepare specimens for the referral laboratory. Ensures appropriate processing (centrifugation; separation of serum/plasma; generating packing slips from the EHR; collating, wrapping and appropriately storing specimens; meeting carrier pickup times and arranging for special transport methods).

  • Exercise clinical judgment in determining proper specimen processing techniques.

  • Educate and direct subordinates in proper methods and techniques.

  • Assesses the competency of subordinates from a clinical perspective.

  • Communicates information to keep subordinates apprised of pertinent issues, activities, events, etc. (e.g., challenging patients, issues with tests, coordinating complicated draws, etc.).

Five (5) years of relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position

OR

Education and Experience:

A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position equal to five (5) years

  • Two years recent (within the past five years) working in a professional clinical laboratory as a Medical Technologist with experience in specimen processing and CLIA waived testing

  • Exceptional phlebotomy skills including experience with a “difficult stick” patient population

  • Demonstrated commitment to laboratory, phlebotomy, safety, and infection control practices

  • Supervisory experience

  • Experience working with psychiatric/behavioral health population

  • College graduate or equivalent who has passed a certification examination for Medical Technologist by ASCP, HEW, or AMT or successful completion of an accredited MLT program with ASCP Board Certification is also accepted.

  • Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology
