GENERAL SUMMARY

The Accessibility Center is part of the Student Programming and Resource Center (SPARC) in the Enrollment Administration and Student Success Division at the Community College of Denver. The Accessibility Center supports students, faculty, and staff with disability/accommodation-related information. Students served through the Center have an array of disabilities and needs. This position focuses on working with students in a manner that leads to persistence, retention, completion and transfer to four-year institutions.

This position provides:

  • Access to CCD programs and services for students with disabilities through accommodations, services and principles of Universal Design.

  • Compliance with and fully supports the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA).

  • Referrals and guidance to students with disabilities to resources within CCD as well as throughout the community.

Description of Job

PRIMARY DUTIES:

The Accessibility Specialist is primarily responsible for coordinating the intake process for students with disabilities or suspected disabilities. This intake process involves an interview with the student, collection of appropriate disability documentation and determination of appropriate accommodations. This individual guides students in the college process. This includes students requesting accommodations each semester; as well as encouraging student self-advocacy skills; referrals to appropriate college or campus resources for students with course eligibility; scheduling; and college and career success tools.

This position coordinates and case manages accommodated test scheduling. This includes bringing all pieces of testing together in a timely way – student test appointment scheduling, working with faculty to receive exams timely, working with personnel in the Testing Center to reserve space, assign and/or provide Assistive Technology, and proctors, and managing overflow space and proctor needs during high exam times, such as during finals week.

The Accessibility Specialist supports, educates and trains CCD faculty and staff regarding disabilities and the impact specific disabilities have in the post-secondary setting while encouraging the use of Universal Design. This position trains and advises CCD faculty and staff on the impact of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA). This position is responsible for staying current on best practices in disability services in the post-secondary setting, including participation in CO/WY AHEAD and attendance at applicable workshops and conferences. The Accessibility Specialist also participates in college activities such as committee work and recruitment.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education(Minimum/Required):

Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, human services, vocational rehabilitation, or related field, or equivalent work experience.

Experience (Minimum/Required):

Experience working with persons with disabilities in a related field such as higher education, counseling, teaching, or case management.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Knowledge of disabilities and the impact of disabilities in the post-secondary setting.

Knowledge of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA), FERPA, and other regulations.

Maintains confidentiality.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Familiarity with psychometric and psychological/learning assessment reports and Assistive Technologies.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Banner/Navigate.

Ability to exercise critical human relations skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with students and the college community.

Excellent attention to detail.

Ability to manage multiple projects at the same.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Post-secondary education.

Master’s degree in a field such as counseling, vocational rehabilitation, or education.

Experience:

Extensive working knowledge of Assistive Technologies.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:Bilingual.
