Xcel Energy Wildfire Investigation Program Manager in Denver, Colorado

Position Summary

Identifies trends, patterns, and risk factors related to wildfire ignition, which ultimately inform strategies for prevention and risk management. Investigates to determine the origin and cause of wildfires through thorough investigation and analysis.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Investigations - Conduct on-site investigations to determine origin and cause of wildfires. Gather and analyze physical evidence such as debris, photographs, equipment, and other information to determine root cause of wildfire. Collaborate with firefighters and other relevant individuals to gather information. Stay current with investigative techniques.

  • Reporting - Document findings and prepare detailed reports summarizing investigation results. Collaborate with local fire agencies, government agencies, insurance companies, and legal professionals as necessary. Maintain accurate records.

  • Data Analysis & Interpretation - Utilize advanced statistical methods and data analysis techniques to identify trends and patterns in wildfire ignition sources such as power lines, equipment, vegetation, and human activities near utility infrastructure. Collaborate with the Wildfire Risk team, meteorologists, researchers, and data scientists to develop models that predict ignition probabilities based on various factors. Utilize this information to mitigate wildfire risks. Integrate scientific findings into wildfire prevention plans and emergency response protocols.

  • Risk Assessment & Mitigation Strategies - Assess and prioritize wildfire ignition risks across different regions and ecosystems. Develop and implement strategies to mitigate ignition risks, working closely with stakeholders, including Xcel Energy Operations teams, government agencies, and local communities.

  • Technical Expertise & Innovation - Stay updated on the latest advancements in wildfire science, remote sensing technologies, and GIS applications relevant to ignition analysis. Drive innovation in wildfire ignition analysis methodologies and tools, incorporating new technologies and approaches to improve accuracy and effectiveness.

Minimum Requirements

  • BS in Fire Science, Forensic Science, Environmental Science, Forestry, related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Certification as a Fire Investigator (CFI) or other relevant certifications strongly desired.

  • Proven experience in wildfire investigation or wildfire research, particularly ignition analysis, risk assessment, or related fields.

  • Knowledge of fire behavior.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey technical information to diverse audiences.

  • Passion for wildfire management.

  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities.

  • Travel to various locations to conduct investigations is required.

Non-Bargaining

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $105,600.00 to $150,000.00 per year
