The Student Success and Retention Advocate will focus on promoting holistic student wellness for the School of Public Affairs. Through providing early support and follow-up for complex situations involving students of concern, providing academic and career advising to graduate students, and supervising key student success team staff members, this individual will directly impact student retention and program completion . The Student Success and Retention Advocate will report to the Associate Dean of Student Success & Strategic Initiatives and will advise & monitor students, develop action plans to facilitate referrals to on-and off-campus resources. In addition, the Student Success and Retention Advocate will oversee SPA's team for informed and engaged students (TIES), develop and lead programs, trainings, and workshops for faculty, staff, and students that support holistic student development and success.

Student Success & Retention Advocate

What you will do:

Academic Advising (50 - 65%)

  • Maintain a caseload of graduate students as advisees for SPA's

Case Management and Referrals for SPA Students (25 - 15%):

  • Promote, provide referrals to, receive low acuity referrals from, and partner with the University of Colorado Denver CARE team

  • Develop and maintain a database of referral resources for social service agencies within the local community; facilitate relationships with on-campus and off-campus agencies and resources to connect students to long-term support

  • Conduct intake meetings with undergraduate and graduate students to determine needs for appropriate referrals

  • Works with deans and faculty regarding individual students and behaviors which affect the classroom environment

  • Coordination and outreach of support services, including referral and liaison with housing agencies, social services, mental health services, financial support agencies, food services, and other basic needs resources for students

  • Assists students in making use of College and/or community services and benefits by monitoring and tracking individual cases and progress to support compliance with recommendations, ongoing assessment and address new or emerging concerns as they arise or transition from campus services to external providers (e.g. psychiatric/psychological treatment services, housing, food, etc.), and from external providers to appropriate College services

  • Focus specifically on referrals for financial support and resources for students. Develop expertise in financial aid policies, procedures, and options for students

  • The Assistant Director will not provide clinical services - the person in this role will provide training on life skills, academic tools, and other proactive, personal skills, but will not support students with counseling or therapeutic care

Career coaching for graduate and undergraduate SPA students (15%)

  • Schedule and provide 1:1 career and professional development

  • In partnership with other academic advisors, develop and implement public service and criminal justice focused career development programs or events

  • Respond to employer communications and develop relationships with local talent managers to match skill demand with skills taught in SPA programs

Additional Key Priorities (10%)

  • Supervision and staff training

  • Supervise the Academic Services Manager (1.0 FTE University Staff)

  • Consult with other SPA Advisors (3.0 FTE University Staff) on complex student cases requiring escalation to the Assistant Director or Associate Dean

  • May provide training to SPA faculty and staff on intervention, redirect, and wellbeing skills

  • Partner with SPA staff and faculty to apply evidence to improve student-facing practices

  • Engage first-generation students as they navigate through higher education

  • Serve as liaison with CARE team, Financial Aid, Career Center and CU Denver Health and Well-Being units across campus

  • Co-chair SPA Scholarship Committee each semester.

Qualifications you already possess (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Five years of case management and/or higher education advising experience

  • Academic advising experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Higher Education or other related field

Preferred Qualification to possess (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Higher Education or other related field

  • Supervision experience

  • Ten years of case management experience

  • Experience working in the Denver-metro area

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bilingual - prefer Spanish

Conditions of Employment

  • This position follows a hybrid work structure where employees can work remotely up to 2 days per week, or from the office, as needed, based on demands of specific tasks or personal work preferences. Working from the office is encouraged when working on tasks that require a high degree of collaboration.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary for this position has been established at $82,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
