Orthopedics/Urology Medical/Surgical Unit (4C South) specializes in orthopedic trauma and spinal cord injury patient care. Nurses in the orthopedic med/surg unit focus on each patient as an individual, working cohesively as a team to achieve the best patient outcomes. This 17-bed med/surge unit is fast-paced with a strong team-focused culture. The nurse-to-patient ration is 1:5 and CNAs have an outstanding patient ratio of 1:5. Individuals who are highly ambitious and hardworking thrive in this team-oriented environment.
Job Summary
The Nursing Apprentice, under the direct supervision of an RN, performs basic patient care activities. The Nursing Apprentice role allows nursing students an opportunity to enhance clinical skills in a hospital environment while still enrolled in an ADN or BSN program. The Nursing Apprentice I adheres to the American Nurses Association (ANA) standards of professional nursing and performance, and the ANA Code of Ethics (2015) to provide care to all patients. Utilizes the Theory of Human Caring and Caritas in daily practice. "Jean Watson, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, Founder / Director, Watson Caring Science Institute".
Essential Functions:
Performs basic patient care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including but not limited to, monitoring vital signs, taking blood glucose measurements, and recording intake and output. (30%) Assists patients with tending to personal care and activities of daily living, including but not limited to, bathing, grooming and eating. (10%) Reports abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to nursing staff. (10%) Assists with keeping unit(s) and patient rooms stocked, clean, and orderly. (10%) Develop specific clinical nurse skills through observation of experts and supervised, hands-on experience. (10%) Documentation that complies with clinical guidelines. (10%) Partners with interprofessional team on healthcare consumer throughput by proactively solving problems related to capacity and healthcare consumer flow. (10%) Collaborates with interprofessional teams to incorporate Lean principles for quality improvement initiatives. (10%) Education:
High School Diploma or GED Must be within 6 months of passing the NCLEX Required Work Experience:

Ability to ensure confidentiality of patient information by creating and maintaining a secure and trusting environment by not sharing information learned on the job, except when necessary in the performance of the job responsibilities or to improve a patient's care. Ability to ensure all duties, responsibilities and competencies are conducted in a manner that is effective and appropriate to patients/clients to who care/service is being provided. Demonstrates knowledge and applicability of the principles of growth and development over the life span, as well as demonstrating the ability to assess data reflecting the patient's status and interpreting appropriate cultural information of the patient(s) to whom care/ services is being delivered/provided.
