We are looking for engineers with hands on control automation experience. As we grow we are structuring our team to own more of our engineering in house. In this role you will work with the Principals and the Senior Global Engineers to drive the standardization of designs across the global region in production data centers and resolve open technical issues in the controls space. As part of the team, you will work with highly motivated experts and innovators in the data center industry. You will drive multiple projects, including multimillion dollar controls deployments and retrofitting legacy buildings. Utilizing Amazon Leadership principles, you will develop new processes or standards and test new innovations in the controls space. You will participate in the research and development of new technologies and designs applicable to our products or services. You will be also responsible for writing technical documentation for such projects. You must be capable of defining critical equipment specifications and approving equipment submittals. Amazon has a global presence. Travel will be necessary but shouldn’t be more than 30%. International support will be part of the job, and some international travel will be necessary. Support could consist of working on international teams and could require developing schematic and design document packages. An understanding of international electrical design requirements is preferable.

Key job responsibilities

The Electrical Controls Engineer leads global electrical controls and power monitoring initiatives for both existing and new generational designs. This role requires expertise in high voltage (HV) and medium voltage (MV) power systems, typically ranging from 4.16 kV to 138 kV and beyond.

Key responsibilities include:

Spearheading technical initiatives across the fleet, focusing on HV/MV power systems and controls.

Conducting root cause analysis on major electrical incidents within the current fleet to extract valuable lessons and inform future design improvements.

Reviewing and approving modifications to the Controls Basis of Design, ensuring alignment with industry standards and best practices.

Serving as a global subject matter expert in:

  • Electrical switchgear, including air-insulated and gas-insulated technologies

  • Generator controls, encompassing excitation systems and voltage regulators

  • Power monitoring systems, including SCADA and advanced metering infrastructure

Providing technical guidance on integrating renewable energy sources and energy storage systems with existing HV/MV infrastructure.

Staying up-to-date with emerging technologies in electrical power systems, such as digital substations and smart grid applications.

A day in the life

The Electrical Controls Engineer works with AWS stakeholders ranging from Sr and Principle MEP Engineering, Product and Program managers, and Operations to create and iterate upon the AWS Infrastructure Automation products. Depending on scope and size of projects, this includes developing these systems jointly with the programmers and developers on the team as well as on smaller projects as the sole engineer responsible for all aspects.

About the team

The Controls System Development team operates as a crucial component within Amazon Web Services' expansive Data Center Engineering organization and Data Center Community. This globally distributed team comprises talented builders collaborating across various international locations, leveraging diverse expertise to drive innovation in control systems for AWS data centers.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, HVAC, or other related engineering degree.

  • Cumulative 5-10 years of experience with electrical diagrams, power monitoring, control diagrams, building operations, control circuits, industrial HVAC.

  • 3-5 years of experience directly related to data center or mission critical facility design.

  • Minimum 2 years' of experience with one or more of the following products [Siemens: Apogee/Disego] [Honeywell: Building Controls/Trend] [Schneider Electric: PowerLogic/Struxureware] [Rockwell Automation: FactoryTalk, Tridium Niagra] [Eaton: Foreseer] [ABB: Decathalon] [Johnson Controls: Metasys] [Codesys][SEL: acSELerator QuickSet][Inductive Automation: Ignition]

  • Understanding of HV/MV power distribution systems, including transformers, switchgear, and protection schemes.

  • Experience with HV/MV substation design and operation principles.

  • Familiarity with relevant standards and codes such as IEEE, IEC, and NFPA for HV/MV systems.

  • Knowledge of power system analysis tools (e.g., ETAP, SKM Power Tools, PowerFactory).

  • Understanding of HV/MV cable sizing, protection coordination, and fault calculations.

  • Experience with HV/MV equipment specifications and selection (e.g., circuit breakers, disconnect switches, surge arresters).

  • Familiarity with SCADA systems for HV/MV power system monitoring and control.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer, Chartered Engineer, or regional equivalent. Direct experience with the construction, operation, or maintenance of data centers. In depth understanding of critical data center electrical equipment.

  • Experience with fast track design/build projects and or multiple significant upgrade projects. Experience with large scale technical operations or large-scale compute farms.

  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, IBC, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.

  • Possess leadership and problem solving skills. Be a motivated, highly dependable individual. Possess excellent communication skills, attention to detail, maintain high quality standards.

  • Ability to research and carry new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities into deployment/construction.

  • An ability and willingness to think outside of the box to find creative and innovative solutions to reduce costs with no impact on quality, reliability, or maintainability.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $105,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
