The Education, Partnership, and Volunteer Section (EDPV) provides statewide formal and informal educational programs and activities to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) customers (internal and external) and constituents (hunters, anglers, outdoor recreationists, schools, etc.); develops organizational statewide partnerships with internal and external stakeholders regarding shared/common interests (participant recruitment and outreach, resource conservation, education, etc.); recruits, trains, and coordinates the use of volunteers statewide in a variety of activities and programs relating to Colorado’s wildlife, outdoor recreation resources, and the management of those resources. The ten statewide programs within EDPV are: Formal Education, Archery in the Schools, Volunteer, Partnership, Hunter Education, Hunter Outreach, Angler Education, Wildlife Viewing, Interpretation, and School Programs.

Description of Job

The National Association for Interpretation (NAI) defines interpretation as “a purposeful approach to communication that facilitates meaningful, relevant, and inclusive experiences that deepen understanding, broaden perspectives, and inspire engagement with the world around us.” Interpreters connect visitors to important natural, cultural, and historical resources at parks, nature centers, and historical sites through in-person interpretive programs, as well as self-guided, non-personal interpretive media (e.g. signs and exhibits). The Interpretive Signs and Exhibits Coordinator must have extensive knowledge of non-personal interpretive principles, design, techniques, and materials. The coordinator must also have considerable knowledge of the natural and cultural history of the state, outdoor recreation and resource management practices, the importance of inclusive and holistic storytelling, communication strategies, and audience dynamics.

The Interpretive Signs and Exhibits Coordinator is a subject-matter expert in planning, designing, and implementing non-personal interpretive resources, such as interpretive signs and interactive educational exhibits. This position is responsible for the development and program management of the statewide interpretive signs and exhibits project across CPW sites. This role involves collaborating with various sections, staff, partners and vendors across the state to create engaging and educational signs and displays that enhance the visitor experience, support the organization's mission, include Indigenous and holistic storytelling of state lands, offer inclusive and accessible experiences, and effectively communicate key agency messages. The coordinator will oversee all aspects of sign and exhibit development from concept to completion, ensuring high standards of design, accuracy, relevancy, and visitor engagement are accomplished. This position works directly with the Statewide Interpretation and Wildlife Viewing Coordinator, Regional Education Coordinators, the graphic design team, and other interest holders to develop and implement project goals and objectives.

This position is instrumental in fulfilling CPW’s mission of providing a quality state parks system and enjoyable and sustainable outdoor recreation opportunities that educate and inspire current and future generations to serve as active stewards of Colorado's natural resources. This position enhances the public’s awareness, appreciation, and understanding of the natural, cultural, and recreational resources managed by CPW; influences visitor attitudes and behaviors to foster responsible actions and resource stewardship; and provides visitors with user-friendly and consistent information to have an educational, safe and positive visit to CPW sites.

Interpretive Sign and Exhibit Project Management

Directs statewide activities of the CPW Interpretive Sign and Exhibit Program, including oversight of sign and exhibit visioning, planning, design, production, fabrication, and installation. Is the primary point of contact for agency-wide interpretive sign/exhibit projects. Defines project scope, goals, and deliverables that support agency and program vision and professional best practices in collaboration with agency staff and interest holders. Develops comprehensive project plans, outlining timelines, resource allocation, and tasks necessary for successful project completion. Coordinates project activities, resources, equipment, and information. Proactively manages changes in project scope, identifies potential risks/issues, and devises contingency plans. Coaches, mentors, motivates, and supervises project team members and contractors, and influences them to take positive action and accountability for their assigned work. Builds, develops, and grows any business relationships vital to the success of the project. Prepares regular/annual program reports, including partnership project reports as needed. Provides input for plans, policies, and procedures at both the regional and state levels and attends trainings and meetings as assigned or approved.

Conducts project reviews and evaluates the results at the end of the project and creates recommendation reports to identify successful and unsuccessful project elements. Ensures project deliverables meet deadlines, quality standards and client expectations.

Leads collaborative planning with internal and external interest holders to execute a vision for self-guided interpretation and education at CPW sites. Coordinates with staff, partnering agencies, sovereign Tribes, non-governmental organizations, and other parties to identify, develop, and install signs and exhibits media that convey statewide, regional, and place-based interpretive themes related to the diverse scenic, natural, cultural, and historical resources of Colorado’s state lands.

The role must have a working understanding of current technology in the areas of desktop publishing; graphic and computerized design; audio, visual, and web-based media; and exhibit development. It is critical to keep current with industry developments and best practices in these areas for incorporation into non-personal interpretation.

This position requires knowledge of rules, regulations, and procedures governing non-personal communications and must be knowledgeable in federal and state accessibility laws and standards for exhibits, non-personal products, and information and communication technology.

Graphic Design Projects

The Interpretive Signs and Exhibits Coordinator is responsible for securing and working with interpretive contractors to create thought-provoking, visually appealing, and/or interactive graphic designs for interpretive signs, exhibits, displays, and other projects. This position may assist with creating visually engaging and informative graphics for interpretive signs, exhibits, and displays, as well as helping with other graphic design projects as needed. This role involves collaborating with vendors, CPW interpreters, content developers, and other interest holders in designing materials that enhance the visitor experience and effectively communicate educational content.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications:

Seven (7) years of relevant experience in project management that includes educational and/or interpretive signs and/or exhibits management or an occupation related to the work assigned to this position

OR

A combination of related education in project management, interpretive design, science communication, visual arts, museum studies, storytelling or related courses and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to seven (7) years

Substitutions

Additional appropriate experience will substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis. Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

  • Current or former State experience relevant to this position

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification

  • Certified Interpretive Planner and/or Certified Heritage Interpreter Certification

  • Interpretive Guide Certificate or equivalent
