The Office of University Risk Management is responsible for affirmative control and minimization of risk, promoting a strong proactive loss prevention program, and using aggressive leading edge concepts to insure the safety of students, employees and others as well as protecting the assets and income of each system campus.

Position Summary:

This position supports the Director and campus leaders on items related to continuously improving risk management processes, risk identification, loss control, claims, insurance and other information related to risk management assistance for two diverse major, academic, research campuses. CU Denver is an urban research university with educational offerings including engineering, liberal arts, business and architecture. The CU Denver campus is located in downtown Denver on a shared Auraria campus serving primarily a commuter and graduate student population with limited student housing. CU Anschutz in Aurora, is known internationally as a premier, health sciences research, education, healthcare, patient serving institution. The Anschutz campus has multiple hospital partners on the campus that the University operates within its own governmental authority. Students here are primarily graduate level and above, in dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and the school of medicine.

Working within the University's consolidated risk management program, the Associate Director must cooperatively and collaboratively work with many offices and departments within the CU Denver and CU Anschutz campuses, the Auraria Higher Education Center, CU Medicine, Fort Logan, partner hospitals, cities, counties and redevelopment authorities as well as other campuses within the University of Colorado. The CU Denver and CU Anschutz campuses each have their own Chancellor and senior executive team that have specific risk appetites and endeavors that need tailored risk management approaches. The Associate Director will support two campus operations and will travel to both campus locations as well as the CU Systems office when necessary. The Associate Director will act as the lead for risk management projects or inquiries as the Director delegates based on experience and level of competency.

This position is exempt from the State of Colorado Classified Staff System and reports to the Director of University Risk Management (URM) for CU Denver and CU Anschutz operations.

Where You Will Work:

This position is approved for an onsite work arrangement. This position will require an in person arrangement at initial time of hire, but a hybrid work arrangement can be discussed in the future. Travel to the campuses is required as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Support the Director for CU Denver and CU Anschutz campus operations

  • Leads risk management projects and inquiries, which may include:

  • Certificate of Insurance requests and renewal requirements

  • Healthcare, clinical operations, coverage and loss control process support

  • Clinical trial, biologic manufacturing and bench research coverage support

  • Risk assessment for higher risk activities

  • Film and video requests including those with UAV use and location agreements

  • Events with alcohol review and approval

  • Minor activities - including camps

  • Internship and Trainee initiatives

  • Fine Arts Loan Agreements

  • Facility Use Agreements,

  • Events on and off campus,

  • Contract review, negotiation and approval,

  • Facilitates carrier loss control visits,

  • Collection and submission of underwriting data for the University's insurance renewals and new coverage requests for CU Denver and CU Anschutz, as requested.

  • Interacts with campuses International Risk Management Committee in areas related to the risk management of campus international travel. This includes proactively working with the Office of International Affairs, a variety of campus departments' faculty, staff, and students, committee(s) related to international safety crisis response, and CU Systems Travel office. This also includes participating in the creation of new policies and procedures at the campus level, promoting related risk management techniques, advising, and training on CU's foreign insurance policies

  • Assists Director in other International and Domestic travel support and policies as requested

  • Participates and provides backup to Director in the direction, facilitation, and development of a variety of services to control and minimize risk on the campuses and operations in the multitude of areas included in the CU Denver and CU Anschutz operational purview. Services are developed to support campus partners in managing relevant financial, fixed asset, operational and employment related risks associated with a major academic research, health and science university campus and associated operations (clinics, manufacturing facilities and more)

  • Understands basics of medical malpractice coverages and their impact or coordination with URM coverages

  • Assists with risk assessment, loss control and transfer of risk related to clinical trial, clinical care and bench research

  • Participates in review, development and approval of insurance requirements in campus contracts, including, but not limited to; legal counsel contracts, MOUs, affiliation agreements, procurement contracting, construction, special events, fine arts, grants, product development, clinical trial agreements, research agreements, leases, property transfers, professional services agreements, international endeavors and other insurable risks.

  • Reviews and approves various third-party contractor certificates of liability insurance, assuring appropriate limits and coverages are provided per contract terms or scope of work

  • Coordinates, facilitates and recommends loss control activities, communicating effectively with associates on the Campuses and the various Schools, Colleges and Departments they represent

  • Develops and delivers relevant subject matter training programs to a wide variety of collaborators

  • Participates and provides risk management guidance in campus disaster planning and emergency preparedness activities

  • Works closely with campus partners representing Facilities Management, Public Safety, University Counsel, Parking and Transportation, and Schools/Colleges.

  • Coordinates with System staff to provide services needed for Campus operations in areas of claims administration and loss reports

  • Develops and coordinates, in conjunction with the URM Directors, the University-wide Risk Management Standards and other special projects that arise

  • Works closely and collaboratively with associates within University Risk Management for the development and implementation of processes, programs, guidelines, policies and procedures that support an overall University strategy to manage the cost of providing asset and income loss control, loss protection and risk financing

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Salary: The anticipated hiring range has been established at $125,000 - $128,000

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education in business, risk management, safety or related field, or equivalent professional experience (professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis).

  • Six (6) years combined full-time, professional experience in a risk management, safety, health and/or property & casualty industry related position.

  • Three (3) years' of leadership experience, which may be in a managerial or supervisory role, experience leading projects and large initiatives, professional development and leadership training, and/or project management skills and working with high level leadership

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or post-baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education in the field of business, risk management, safety or related field

  • Nine (9) years' professional experience in a risk management, safety, health and/or property & casualty industry related position with demonstrated supervisory responsibilities.

  • Four (4) years' of leadership experience, which may be in a managerial or supervisory role, experience leading projects and large initiatives, professional development and leadership training, and/or project management skills and working with high level leadership

  • Professional experience in higher education and/or Colorado public entity risk management

  • Professional experience in healthcare or health sciences, research education.

  • Leadership experience and management ability in a complex organization.

  • Professional designation of CIC, ARM, CRM, CPCU or other like designations.
