The Associate Director of Residence Life is responsible for the strategic oversight and development of residence life programming and services, as well as contributing to broader Office of Housing and Dining initiatives. The Associate Director of Residence Life is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the residential communities, fostering a sense of belonging among residents, and providing support and resources to residents in need. The role will work collaborative across the campus to develop curriculum, residential transition programs (i.e., the Second Year & Transfer Student Residential Experience) and Living Learning Communities (LLC). In collaboration with the Senior Associate Director for Housing Operations, the Associate Director for Residence Life will lead Emergency Management Planning efforts and work closely with Housing and Dining leadership to establish strategies related to student safety and emergency response. This position is responsible for managing multiple budgets, hiring training and development and supervision of staff. The Associate Director is an essential personnel role on campus.

What you will do:

  • Creates, leads, and facilitates a comprehensive, cohesive, compelling housing and residence life department that is in-line with and a complement to the university mission and focused on supporting our students through their complete experience at the University of Colorado Denver.

  • Establish and maintain a strategic direction aligned with retention persistence best practices that supports the institutional mission

  • Advance a collaborative and unrelenting commitment to the student experience through the recognition of our mission as an HSI, AANAPISI institution.

  • Oversee the ongoing development and revision of a comprehensive residential curriculum that centers a diverse residential population in collaboration with other units in the Division of Student Affairs

  • Responsible for the Sophomore Year Residential Experience program; ensures the seamless transition of first year students into the Lynx Crossing Sophomore Year Residential Experience.

  • Works across campus to develop a Living Learning Communities (LLC) program with each school/college; collaborates closely with Faculty and Deans to develop individualized LLCs.

  • Acts as a strategic liaison for each LLC; provides training; supports policy and programming development.

  • Collaborates and directs the recruitment of new students for LLCs with the respective academic partners and the First Year Experience team.

  • Ensure that living learning programs effectively bridge academic and student life and are grounded in collective responsibility of well-being, research, and best practices.

  • Assist the Executive Director with special projects, assignments and tasks upon request.

  • Assists with the recruitment selection, training, and supervision, evaluation and development of staff members in the department.

  • This role is in charge of the Emergency Management Planning; works closely with Housing and Dining leadership to establish strategies related to Student Safety and Emergency response.

  • Interprets, enforces and systematically reviews policies and procedures necessary to provide a safe and secure living environment on campus.

  • Trains staff responsible for adjudicating student conduct in Housing.

  • Build and work with diverse teams effectively

  • Remains compete and current by participating in professional development opportunities, locally, regionally and nationally.

  • Works closely with the Executive Director to lead a department wide assessment initiatives related to the residential student experience including collecting data on student engagement, gathering residential and Resident Assistant feedback, and implementing changes based on university goals and the mission of Housing & Dining

  • Collaborate with the Associate Director of Housing Operations to monitor the residential facilities and ensure a safe, secure and healthy community environment.

  • Collaborate internally and externally to maintain an effective and responsive on call response system in Housing & Dining response to emergencies and emergent issues.

  • Develop and support training for staff at various levels of the organization

  • Liaison with the Senior Coordinator of Conferences & Special Events with annuals events for prospective students and their families.

  • Manages the Residence Life budgets.

  • Directly contributes to broader strategy discussions related the expansion of residence life programming.

  • Interprets, enforces and systematically reviews policies and procedures necessary to provide a safe and secure living environment on campus (e.g. resident handbook).

  • Trains staff responsible for adjudicating student conduct in Housing.

  • Establishes program expectations for staff with an emphasis on community development, leadership, diversity and multiculturalism, in order to enhance a holistic approach for residential students' educational, cultural, social and personal growth.

  • Supervises the coordination of the educational training programs for staff, including the August and January training periods.

  • Completes biweekly one-on-one meetings with direct supervisees.

  • Reviews and formulates all residence hall policies and procedures, as well as oversees their implementation and enforcement.

  • Responds to crisis situations in the halls on an administrative on-call rotation. The AD is on-call for two consecutive weeks, including break and holiday periods.

  • Responds and resolves student and parent concerns as needed. Logs interactions with students, parents, etc., to track customer service.

  • Serves as liaison to the Dean of Students Office, Office of Conduct and Community Standards, Office of Case Management, and Office of Equity regarding conduct, mental health, and other student concerns, Oversight and implementation for the housing conduct process.

  • Provides leadership, as a member of the Campus Assessment, Response and Evaluation (CARE) Team, to Housing & Dining staff in serving students in crisis.

  • Coordinates with Auraria Higher Education Center Police Department (AHEC PD) to perform safety walks and safety programming within the residential community.

  • Meets weekly with AHEC PD Leadership to discuss and action plan for any residents facing serious health or safety concerns.

  • Reviews and edits the Housing & Dining Emergency Management Plan annually.

  • Coordinates with University Emergency Management services to facilitate annual and ad hoc tabletop exercises for emergency preparedness purposes.

  • Effectively utilizes operational systems such as StarRez, Maxient, Salto and others to perform administrative functions of the position.

  • Organizes assessment strategies for all full-time and paraprofessional staff.

  • Directs utilization of the Salto Key System.

  • Provides oversight and additional guidance to the Residence Hall Councils.

  • Represents the department with regional housing organizations.

  • Coordinates Clery Act Reporting for Housing and Dining Department, and ensures compliance of all staff; including contract staff.

  • Facilitates the updates and organization of the departmental brochures, and student-facing policy documents.

Qualifications you already possess (Minimum Qualifications)

  • A bachelor's degree

  • Progressive experience in a collegiate Housing and/or Dining residential environment

  • 5 years of relevant experience

  • Experience with residential experience, student development theory, and/or student programming, assessment

  • Experience with management and/or supervision in a professional environment

  • Experience working with diverse populations

  • Experience with emergency response and/or crisis management

Preferred Qualification to possess (Preferred Qualifications)

  • A master's degree in education, communication, social science, women and gender studies, psychology, computer science, information systems, business, health sciences, physical sciences, public administration, business administration, higher education, counseling, hospitality, liberal arts, finance, accounting, human services, student affairs, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.

  • 2+ years professional experience managing budgets.

  • Experience working with students in a higher education environment.

  • Experience working with living learning communities and or academic partnerships

  • Six plus years working in higher education

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be available to be on-call including consecutive weeks, breaks and holiday periods.

  • Occasional work during the evening and/or weekends may be required.

  • This position requires an onsite presence on campus 5 days a week

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $78,000-$85,000

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
