The Department of Economics is seeking Adjunct Instructors for the 2024/25 Academic Year. We are specifically seeking qualified instructors to teach "Economics: A Critical Introduction" (ECON 1020) and "Introduction to Micro- and Macroeconomics" (ECON 1030), and will also consider applicants interested in teaching an upper-division elective. Consistent with our department's priorities, we will give priority consideration to applicants that are familiar with economic history, the history of economic thought, philosophy of social science, and heterodox perspectives on economic theory and policy. The Department offers a curriculum that emphasizes the understanding of the social apparatus that governs the production and distribution of goods and services, and how economic theories have developed over time to address economic questions. Throughout the curriculum, we present alternative perspectives on the historical and present-day relevance of the material, employing primary sources and significant reading assignments, and we encourage written assignments that require critical thinking. Position Summary
Adjunct instructor(s) who can teach ECON 1020 "Economics: A Critical Introduction" and / or ECON 1030 "Introduction to Micro- and Macroeconomics", and / or an upper-level ECON elective. For ECON 1020 and ECON 1030, the department will provide a course outline and required materials. DU is on a 10-week quarter system and courses are typically scheduled to meet twice a week for 110 min each session. Preference will be given to instructors who can offer courses in-person on the DU campus in Denver
Ideally, we are looking for instructors who can also provide critical and historically grounded context to the concepts covered. Preference will be given to instructors with relevant prior teaching experience.
Essential Functions
Prepare lectures / class sessions that cover the required material, design assignments that test the students' learning with reference to the stated student learning outcomes (SLOs), grade assignments and assign final grades, and hold regular office hours (in-person or virtually).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
We are always seeking instructors who can communicate the real-world relevance of economic ideas to students from diverse populations and can speak to the impacts of economic policy on typically underrepresented communities.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in Economics
- At least one academic term as an independent instructor or teaching assistant leading independent sessions
Exposure to the history of economic thought (HOET) and / or heterodox economics (through coursework or a personal interest) Preferred Qualifications
Partial completion of or completed PhD in Economics or related social science; if PhD is not in Economics, applicant must have a Master's in Economics
- One academic year experience as an independent instructor

Course Rate
Adjunct faculty are compensated at a rate of $5,060 per 4-credit course.
The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity
