Shell is working with our customers and across sectors to accelerate the transition to net-zero emissions. This requires development of new business opportunities, technologies and technology areas. Wind and Solar are key, as is power transmission and distribution. Applications for growth in renewable power generation are direct use of renewable power and conversion into molecules for which the key candidate is hydrogen via electrolysis of water. We welcome an experienced Solar Technology leader to help realize our target to become a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050.
Where you fit in
In Power Technology you will drive decarbonization by electrification by building and leading our global Solar Technology group and working with teams of experts in the different areas of Renewable Power Generation, Electric Mobility, Energy Storage & Integration and Industrial Electrification. There is a strong interface with the green hydrogen teams.
What’s the role?
The role of the Team Lead Solar Technology will be to build and lead a global multi-disciplinary team of researchers and engineers. That develop and execute the Solar Technology program in support of the renewable power generation business. The main solar technology focus will be Photovoltaic (PV) related. Strategic objectives are:
Technology driven LCOE reduction
Technology for 24/7 green electrons
Technology risk management
Technology to open new markets
Addressing societal license to operate issues
Accountabilities include:
Create and validate the Solar Technology strategy and manage current and future Solar related technology and innovation opportunities closely aligned with the Renewables and Energy Solutions business
Ensure commitments are achieved within agreed time, cost and quality parameters with focus on delivering first mover advantage and business benefits
Providing advanced technical support to the Renewables and Energy Solutions business and anticipating its technology needs, working closely with senior leaders in renewable power generation
Partner with business stakeholders to validate strategic business cases. Define success metrics and criteria and identify, measure; sustain planned vs. achieved benefits from technology and innovation activities
Proactively look for additional benefits to be delivered by taking advantage of systems, processes and data already in place or being deployed
Ensure appropriate stakeholder engagement and communication to ensure Shell is fully prepared to exploit new opportunities in Solar energy as they emerge
Champion the development of long-term strategy and capability within Shell through bringing external perspectives, identifying and promoting best practices; coaching others on advanced skills and contributing to community building
Driving the day-to-day business of Global Solar Technology group - including direction of research goals and objectives and staff management accountabilities
Drive HSSE excellence for all staff and operations with special emphasis on work conducted externally at research universities and third-party labs. Develop and implement fit-for-purpose strategy to drive the right safety culture
Value creation from existing and new collaborations with academic and commercial partners to gain access to Solar technologies
Technology evaluations and support to technical due diligence efforts from the Renewables and Energy Solutions business, Shell Ventures and Gamechanger
Represent Shell in selected external bodies, trade organizations and at conferences
Expert support to government relations to determine policy positions in multiple countries
What we need from you
Bachelor’s degree (min) in Engineering with relevant background in solar PV
Extensive experience in contracting and managing IP for technical collaborations with third parties including start-ups, venture capital, universities, corporate research, research consortia, national labs, etc.
In-depth understanding of the cost structures and technologies in the solar energy landscape
Strong leadership skills to build and drive a global technical team of highly specialized experts towards achieving results that make a difference and guide the future direction of the company
Capable of effective and impactful communications across topics, audiences and formats at all organizational levels
Has passion for people development, including nurturing and mentoring talent that will shape the future of the company
Significant expertise in technology program management with strong HSSE focus
Capable of developing broad internal and external network to stay abreast of the latest developments and engage at a credible and technically competent level with thought leaders in new fields of research
