Stetson University Part-time Summer Maintenance Worker MT9912 in DeLand, Florida

Under the general supervision of a department supervisor, performs skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of buildings with a focus on drywall patching, taping and finishing, priming, painting, staining, and the like involving the use of painting equipment and materials. Incumbent provides the labor and tasks to ensure that painted and stained surfaces at university buildings are maintained in a manner that promotes a positive image of the campus. The position entails manual labor associated with the routine and project type of painting maintenance of university facilities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs preventive maintenance tasks such as inspecting, cleaning, scraping, sanding, painting, and staining of building components or structures such as windows, doors, roofs, stairs, furniture, walls, trim, ceilings, floors, parking lots, curbs, signs, and the like consistent with contemporary standards of good practice. This requires the ability to stand, walk, crouch, bend, and have dexterity with arms and hands. Must be able to climb ladders and work safely from ladders and elevated platforms. This is physically demanding work that often occurs indoors and outdoors in various conditions.

  • Completes work orders specific to painting responsibilities as assigned in a timely manner and updates them accordingly.

  • Maintains inventory of paint and painting supplies including documentation of current colors in use in various campus locations. Keeps paint organized and labeled by building for convenient access. Must be able to lift a 5-gallon bucket of paint independently, weighing an average of 50-60 pounds, using safe lifting practices.

  • Performs routine maintenance of painting equipment and supplies. Frequently inspects ladders and other equipment to verify they are in safe working order.

  • Unlocks doors to perform painting inside secured areas and ensures doors are locked after painting said areas.

  • Moves furniture as needed to complete painting assignments. This requires heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling, up to 25 pounds independently and up to 50 pounds with assistance.

  • Effectively plans and performs painting tasks to meet objectives and deadlines.

  • Protects adjacent surfaces from paint splatter; for example, by covering flooring, taping along edges, removing wallcoverings and switch/outlet plates, and the like. Posts wet-paint signs and caution tape in areas where others may inadvertently come in contact with wet paint materials.

  • Assists in on-the-job training of new staff on routine painting procedures. Provides painting and wall finish technical assistance to other trades workers.

  • May work occasional evenings and weekends to accomplish work that cannot be completed during normal working hours. May be required to work overtime during “all hands” events such as move-in weekend, graduation, and the like.

  • Performs special and other assignments as directed.

Required Skills

  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions in English and to perform routine painting duties without immediate supervision.

  • Possess practical experience and knowledge in the proper methods, practices, and application of various paint and stain products.

  • Ability to correctly use airless sprayers, HVLP sprayers, scaffolding, pressure washers, texture application machines, and aerial lifts following safe work practices.

  • Knowledge of safely working around lead paint according to OSHA and EPA guidelines.

  • Knowledge of the proper selection of correct paints, stains, brushes, application techniques, and the like specific to the requirements of each project.

  • Ability to recognize and remedy paint/coating failures and problems.

  • Ability to apply recognized standards of good practice relevant to matters of safety, security, and maintenance techniques.

  • Ability to effectively plan and coordinate multi-task requirements and meet self and pre-imposed objectives and deadlines.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, students and university community.

  • Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to the trade.

  • Ability to walk and climb stairs. Many buildings have multiple floors with stairs and no elevators.

  • Ability to work in environments with extreme temperature and humidity common in Florida and may work in buildings without air conditioning, heating, or other comforts. May work in areas that are dusty, noisy, and areas that may have unpleasant odors.

  • Ability to respond to emails, text messages, and phone calls in a professional manner.

Required Experience

  • Education: High school diploma or GED preferred.

  • Experience: Two (2) years of hands-on experience in painting, experience in a multi-building maintenance environment preferred, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

    Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record as determined by the University’s auto insurance carrier.
