Job Summary

Housed within the Center for Social Justice and Inclusion (CSJI), the LGBTQIA+ (75%) & Intersectional Identities (25%) Program Manager will support lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, and asexual students across all intersecting marginalized identities (e.g., gender, race/ethnicity, class, age, religion, nationality, ability, and other social identifications) by serving as a resource for the campus community, with special emphasis on retention and engagement. Position includes developing and maintaining student-focused programs and promoting a comprehensive out-of-class experience to ensure a balanced and inclusive educational and social environment. One of the primary responsibilities is to develop, execute and evaluate co-curricular day, evening and weekend programming (virtually and in person) for all students, faculty, staff and the community.

The position reports to the Director of the Center Social Justice and Inclusion and is supported by team members, student program assistants, Student & Academic Affairs. Additionally this position is supported through professional development that may include professional organization memberships, conferences, trainings, and in-house educational opportunities.

Who We Are

The UM-Dearborn serves approximately 9,000 students from the metro Detroit area, as well as throughout Michigan and the world, with 81 birth countries represented on campus. The city of Dearborn, in which we are located, is home to the largest population of Arab and Muslim Americans in the US per capita, and this is reflected in our student body, including our LGBTQ+ population. Nearly half of our students are first generation college students. We have many transfer and returning students who bring a wealth of life experience to campus. Responsibilities*

  • Works to foster a welcoming and nurturing environment for students with a focus on students from historically underrepresented and marginalized communities through programs/events.

  • Designs, coordinates, and delivers educational, cultural and social workshops, programs, and events which focus on LGBTQIA+ identity, gender and sexuality, sexual assault prevention and education, and intersectional identities using student development theory.

  • Serves in an advisory/supportive capacity to PRIDE Student Organization by providing support, advocacy, and program partnership.

  • Establishes and maintains partnerships with Spectrum Center (Ann Arbor Campus LGBTQ Center), The Center for Gender & Sexuality (Flint Campus LGBTQ Center), and SAPAC (Ann Arbor Sexual Assault Center) for support, advocacy, programming, events, and other methods of collaboration.

  • Creates and establishes learning outcomes for programs and initiatives based on the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS Standards).

  • Designs, coordinates and delivers campus wide celebratory events including but not limited to LGBTQIA+ History Month, Pride Month, Transgender Day of Remembrance, Lavender Graduation, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Take Back the Night, Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and Women's History Month.

  • Serves as a resource and advocate for students regarding LGBTQIA+ and gender issues on campus.

  • Supervises student workers, interns, and volunteers, including but not limited to developing work schedule, coordinating workload, and evaluating student work performance.

  • Makes referrals to campus and local resources.

  • Builds relationships with LGBTQ+ staff and faculty and staff and faculty focused on gender and sexuality issues interested in supporting students from marginalized populations.

  • Collaborates and partners within the CSJI to promote intersectionality within the office, workshops, programs, and events.

  • Collaborates and partners with student organizations in event programming.

  • Develops, fosters and maintains strong partnerships and collaborations with community partners and agencies.

  • Supports the CSJI Director in identifying policy and/or procedural changes which may be required to meet the needs of diverse populations.

  • Assists the CSJI Director in executing special initiatives and projects pertaining to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Develops content and manages regular communications across multiple platforms, including flyers, listserv emails, social media posts, website, and brochures.

  • Collaborates with faculty, staff, and other units on campus to host speakers and events.

  • Uses student development theory and the university mission to establish and maintain productive partnerships with students, staff, faculty and community stakeholders.

  • Conducts regular needs assessments and program evaluations to ensure that CSJI programming is aligned with student preferences, CSJI, Student Affairs, and the university?s vision.

  • Ability to work beyond the standard workday, including nights and weekends, for programs and special events, not to exceed a forty hour work week.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree is required with a minimum of two years working in LGBTQIA+ affairs and/or related field; Master?s degree in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, Counseling, or other related field preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience advising diverse student clubs/organizations and event planning; strong student services orientation.

  • Ability to create a warm and welcoming college environment; and excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

  • High level of organization and demonstrable success in handling highly detailed projects from inception to completion, including assessment.

  • Demonstrable programming experience and facilitation skills around gender and sexuality issues.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with multiple constituencies of diverse identities and backgrounds.

  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks with efficiency and attention to detail.

  • Ability to use discretion in managing confidential information.

  • Successfully manage a programming budget and program policies.

  • Ability to collaborate and build strong relationships.

  • Ability to align personal project work with the organization's larger mission.

  • Proven success managing an organization's communications.

  • Understanding of student development theory and intersectional identities.
