The Henry Ford Collections Specialist, Cataloger (part time) in Dearborn, Michigan

The Registrars Office has a part-time Collections Specialist opportunity. As part of an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant, this position will be responsible for ensuring the integrity and completeness of the documentary records of The Henry Ford by researching, cataloging and processing collections artifacts for the project. This position plays a vital role in the digitization of the collections here at The Henry Ford. Reports to the Registrar.

Essential Responsibilities

• Maximizes intellectual access to collections information through the timely creation and/or modification of electronic catalog information, ensuring quality control through associated lexicon, thesauri, and metadata standards following museum field practices and approved by the institution.

• Practices a high standard of advance research using primary and secondary resources to accurately interpret and catalog collections.

• Determines steps that need to be taken to properly organize and catalog objects and groups of objects in the collection; this entails physical and intellectual arrangement.

• Understands and applies relevant professional standards and guidelines. Responsible for keeping up-to-date on revisions in cataloging; including inclusive description practices.

• Creation of work requests in CMS and/or emails as needed for tracking status of collections processing, documentation, and cataloging.

• Provides timely reports on status of projects to supervisor.

• Assists in the development of guidelines for object processing and cataloging.

• Work may include participation in the creation of timely, informative written material which reflects the Mission and Vision of The Henry Ford and align with institutional communications policies. Incorporate images, video files and links to collections records which enhance presentation of the topic and the user experience.

• May train or oversee the work of interns and unpaid staff.

• Works and communicates with a variety of staff, including curators, conservators, digitization staff or others assigned to this project.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Your Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree, preferably in American History, Information Studies, Museum Studies or related field.

• An advanced certificate or degree in Material Culture Studies, Museum Studies or Public History desirable.

• Two or more years' training or experience in museum registration, collections management, archival management or related area preferred.
