What You’ll Be Doing
You will be working on the VMware Pivotal Labs Services team, helping client product teams to design and deliver modern, business-critical, cloud-native applications serving a variety of business and user needs. As a “Labs” Product Designer, you will cross the boundaries between organizational levels, alternately coaching client product designers in user-centered design and lean UX methodologies and approaches.
All of our product team positions are highly collaborative consulting roles, with 85-90% of time spent in direct, 1:1 pairing or larger team collaboration. During the COVID-19 crisis, this collaboration (including user interviews and usability tests) is all managed remotely, with the expectation that face-to-face engagement in a VMware Pivotal Labs office in [insert office location] or various client locations will pick up again once the crisis is resolved.

Collaborate to understand business requirements and work closely with team members to develop solutions
Lead products through discovery, framing, and iterative delivery
Mentor and upskill client design pair in user centered design practices

Required Skills and Experience:
5-8 years Software Product Design or similar experience, shipping products to users (enterprise or large-scale consumer products preferred)
You are highly competent in all areas of Product Design, from user research, experience, interaction, and visual design.
Experience with lean and agile philosophies
Experience operating in a highly technical environment and translating complex design patterns into simple solutions
Experience in training, mentoring, and/or upskilling designers
Ability to expertly facilitate collaborative design activities in a workshop context
Excellent communication, presentation, and organizational skills with a strong work ethic
A portfolio of design work that represents your design process
Experience closely collaborating with engineers and product managers as part of small co-located teams
Experience working independently with clients or stakeholders in a consulting role
Familiarity with modern design tools such as Figma or Sketch
Ability to rapidly iterate on prototypes
Ability to articulate design direction and communicate the designs to Software Engineers
Consistently provides direct and impactful feedback in design reviewsDemonstrates strong consensus and alignment building skills within their product team
Frequently engages designers in their own/adjacent product teams to help them grow their skills and design toolkit
Desired Skills and Experience:
User research experience in technical domains
Some visual identity and branding experience
Experience with data visualization
Mobile design experience
Service Design experience will be valuable
Contributes to the culture of the Product Design team by participating in design-led projects, events and discussions
Experience with supporting the Product Design interview process
50% travel is expected in this role (post COVID-19 crisis)
