Description of Work

Position located in Traffic Services/Pavement Markings Unit (Cumberland County). Employees perform a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance and repair of state-maintained roadways including installation of (Pavement markings and markers). Other work duties include but are not limited to assisting with the (Signal and Signing Units) when needed. Employees must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with crew members, other departments, and the public. Must be able to communicate effectively with various people and work in an outside environment, including extreme heat and cold, year-round climate conditions.” The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date.” Safety toe footwear is recommended.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience in Customer Service

  • Experience in the installation of traffic control such as detours, and lane closures.

  • Experience in at least two pieces of Category B equipment (paint truck, pre-line paint machine, asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device).

  • Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee, and equipment time, and recording quantities of material used.

  • Experience in Intermediate Work Zone Safety and knowledge in Advance Work Zone Safety and NC DOT Workplace Safety Practices.

Additional Expectations:

Physical activities include but are not limited to standing, walking, talking and hearing. Exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Class A CDL with N endorsements required. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe shoes are required. This position may be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School or General Educational Development diploma and (3) three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
