Dept/Div: Activities FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate professional work assisting the Activities Director with planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating K-12 sporting activities and events; managing sports program development and department finances; overseeing facility and equipment use and care; developing positive, motivated student-athletes and students; aligning sports goals with school district strategy, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Activities Director/Assistant Principal.

Essential Functions

  • Coordinates manages and facilitates school-based youth sports.

  • Completes continuing education courses, meetings, and events.

  • Promotes positive communication between coaches, parents, students, and outside agencies.

  • Integrates goals and standards of the school into the sports programs and events.

  • Assists the Athletic Director with evaluating and hiring coaches.

  • Serves as a spokesperson for sports when conversing with the media.

  • Provides various types of electronic and paper communication to the School Board, parents, students, staff, and administrators regarding sport policies, changes, and updates to the sport program.

  • Coordinates the selection, instruction, training, and conditioning of athletes at differing levels in specific sports.

  • Motivates and encourages students to maintain appropriate levels of academic achievement.

  • Develops, communicates, and implements a clear vision for the program.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Comprehensive knowledge of first aid, CPR, and treatment and care of injuries; comprehensive knowledge of school board policies related to sporting and extra-curricular programs; comprehensive knowledge of applicable state rules, regulations and standards; comprehensive knowledge of district policies, manuals, programs, processes, and procedures; thorough knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic; thorough knowledge of standard office practices, procedures and equipment; general knowledge of financial records; general knowledge of school forms and records; thorough skill developing and evaluating student based athlete statistics; thorough skill monitoring and adapting budget information into sport related programs; general skill using and monitoring the safety of standard sport related equipment; general skill operating CPR, AED, and standard first aid equipment; general skill operating standard office equipment and applicable hardware and software; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages; ability to operate various office equipment; ability to meet the public effectively; ability to maintain and enhance knowledge of sport and general coaching techniques through continuing education; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to display sportsmanship, poise, self-control, sense of fairness and judgment, and healthy role-modeling; ability to show leadership, motivational, and communication skills when dealing with students; ability to demonstrate knowledge of policies, procedures, and guidelines for assigned sport set forth by various third party agencies; ability to demonstrate an understanding of school district and board policies, goals, and strategy when developing sport vision, mission and goals; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written format with people with varying levels of English capability; ability to maintain composure and display problem solving skills; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, coaches, administrators, students, and the general public.

    Education and Experience

    Bachelor’s degree with coursework in physical education, education, education administration, athletic training, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Physical Requirements

    This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing and sitting, frequently requires walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

    Special Requirements

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification, First Aid certification, and bloodborne pathogens training within six months of hire.

  • Iowa Teaching license or completion of Iowa Coaching Authorization.

  • Must maintain appropriate certifications and licensure.

  • Experience working in a multicultural setting and with diverse groups of people preferred.

  • Alternatives to the qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable will also be considered.

  • Valid driver’s license in the State of Iowa.
