Description of Work

We are seeking a highly skilled regional Ferry Superintendent with strong leadership skills and the ability to work effectively with others enhancing a professional culture that aligns with the maritime policies, procedures, and mission of the NC Ferry Division. The successful candidate will have experience creating planning assignments and supervising a diverse team of ferry operations managers, crew members, and support staff. This position oversees training programs to enhance the skills and knowledge of operational staff and employees engaged in piloting ferryboats and performing operational duties aboard them. Discretion and judgment are required in determining the nature of repairs to be made or the necessity for complete overhaul to diesel engines. Work in this class is reviewed by a technical supervisor for condition of equipment, safety and efficiency of operations.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating with Vessel Asset Management to identify and schedule repairs, with consideration to ferry schedules, route planning, and fleet deployment.

  • Making periodic inspection of vessels and support equipment associated with operations. Keeping an inventory of all equipment and assuring adequate supplies are in stock.

  • Coordinating with Marine Asset Management to make repairs to slips and landings to ensure security and safety of ferryboats and cargo.

  • Establishing and enforcing rigorous safety standards in accordance with maritime regulations and industry best practices and ensuring compliance with USCG regulations.

  • Managing the ferry operations budget, ensuring cost-effectiveness and optimal resource allocation for the district assigned.

  • Identifying opportunities for cost savings and revenue generation while maintaining service quality.

  • Collaborating with human resources to identify employment needs for district and to respond to personnel needs.

  • Supervision of operation managers to ensure NCDOT policy and procedures are being adhered to; Oversees the day-to-day operations of the vessels, crews and operation of the facilities.

  • Scheduling and communicating with the US Coast Guard for vessel inspection.

  • Determine need for dry-docking of vessel for repairs and need for repairs to port infrastructure.

  • Performs related work as required.

This position will be based out of theCherry Branch Operation facility and will be supervising the Cherry Branch and Southport operations managers. P osition reports directly to the Ferry Director.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Demonstrated ability to prepare periodic reports related to operation, repairs, and special problems of the ferry operation.

Minimum Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in personnel, budgeting or administrative management experience; or, High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and six years of experience comparable to that listed above; or an equivalent combination and directly related experience.
