Union County College is a public comprehensive community college providing quality, affordable, accessible educational programs that serve the greater Union County region. It is the oldest of New Jerseys 19 Associate Degree Colleges, serving both career-minded and transfer-oriented students since 1933. The College enrolls almost 30,000 credit, non-credit and continuing education students and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Many programs lead to the Associate in Arts, Science and Applied Science degrees.

Campus: Plainfield

General Description:

Under the direction of the Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean of Plainfield Campus and Allied Sciences will provide leadership and supervision for faculty and staff in the areas of teaching, curriculum revision and development, technology, and assessment, with a focus on academic excellence. The Dean will proactively pursue strategies that will provide students with clear pathways to their academic goals.

As the leader of an academic division, the Dean will promote accountability and innovation and will contribute to, and participate in the planning, execution, and measurement of student outcomes. The successful individual will foster a culture of success and effective change strategies and will contribute to master planning efforts.

Also responsible for managing the administrative affairs of the Academic Division, the Dean will work effectively with faculty and staff, and promote diversity and value a culture of respect. The Dean will provide a vision for the Division based on best practices and the use of data using inclusive approaches that value the skills and abilities of faculty and staff.

Additionally, this position is responsible for the administration of the Plainfield Campus and for oversight of all campus operations.

Characteristics, Duties and Responsibilities:

Teaching, Learning and Technology

· Support pedagogy that promotes student engagement and learning.

· Encourage the use of technology in the curriculum.

· Support professional development among Division faculty.

· Plan and coordinate division meetings and events.

· Support faculty in meeting the academic needs of students.

· Respond to student questions and concerns and encourage faculty to reach out to students.

· Plan and assist in the development and maintenance of Division web sites.

· Support curriculum development and assessment.

· Promote and support faculty in the design and development of new courses/programs of instruction, deletion of courses/programs and major course/program revision and insure that all programs provide clear academic pathways.

· Oversee all assessment activities and insure that all programs implement their Program Assessment Plan.

· Approve the master schedule in collaboration with the Dean of Curriculum & Assessment.

· Monitor enrollment of all courses within the Division.

· Approve the addition/deletion of courses during registration periods.

· Provide the Provost for Academic Affairs with regular reports including, but not limited to: Weekly Reports; Annual Reports; Assessment Plans; Academic Discipline Plans; Professional Development Plans; Advisory Committees; and Specialized Accreditation Reports.

Division Administration

· Supervise and evaluate all faculty members in the Division.

· Supervise all staff in the Division.

· Serve as an advocate for issues, initiatives, goals, and needs of the Division.

· Implement College policies and regulations within the Division.

· Approve faculty schedules.

· Participate in the recruitment and hiring of faculty and facilitate the search process.

· Interview and recommend final candidates for full time faculty and staff positions.

· Recommend the employment of adjunct faculty to the Provost for Academic Affairs.

· Supervise the advisory committee process for all career programs within the Division.

· Conduct Division meetings.

· Develop budget requests and allocate and manage resources (budgetary, personnel and facilities) within the Division.

· Oversee grant development and administration.

· Coordinate all Division activities with other Deans.

· Facilitate clear communication between the Division and the College community.

· Work in conjunction with the Division Deans of Student Development regarding student concerns .

· Serve on Committees as assigned.

Campus Administration

· Oversee all operations of the campus including academic, student service, facility, and security and continuing education units.

· Prepare academic course scheduling and room/facilities scheduling for on/off campus groups.

· Monitor enrollment, retention and graduation data.

· Participate/support student recruitment efforts.

· Provide for the orientation of new faculty and staff.

· Participate in community outreach, representing the College and promoting joint projects with civic, governmental, and business organizations.

· Monitor campus Dean’s budget.

· Prepare recommendations for the enhancement, development and maintenance of the campus and develops and coordinates special College events.

· Coordinate college-wide Articulation Agreements and collaboration efforts with two-year and four-year institutions, and coordinates all off-campus academic credit programs.

· Stimulate, coordinate, and administer the review and approval process for the introduction of all new academic courses/programs and for the revision of existing courses/programs.

· Represent the Provost for Academic Affairs in serving as immediate administrative supervisor for all staff assigned to the Plainfield Campus

Education Requirements:

• Earned Doctorate Required

Experience:

  • College teaching experience required, community college teaching preferred.

  • Three years of progressive administrative experience in higher education required Health Science or Nursing undergrad preferred.

  • Experience in planning, coordination and on-going improvement of curriculum and instruction preferred.

  • Experience in outcomes assessment preferred.

Competencies and Skills Required:

  • College teaching experience required, community college teaching preferred.

  • Three years of progressive administrative experience in higher education required Health Science or Nursing undergrad preferred.

  • Experience in planning, coordination and on-going improvement of curriculum and instruction preferred.

  • Experience in outcomes assessment preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

• This position’s duties are normally performed in a typical interior/residence work environment, based on the activity scheduled.

• Some physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

• No or very limited exposure to physical risk.

• Some travel is required.
