Seasonal Forestry Assistant/Ground Technician
Duties: Implements maintenance and forestry maintenance plans for forestry, turf, and vegetation health, including mowing, weed mitigation, cultivating, renovating, planting, trimming, pruning, picking up and removing snow and trash, inspecting and repairing playgrounds, and applying herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides safely throughout the park system.
Assists the Forester in the implementation of forestry plans including manual labor cutting, chipping, and loading logs, brush, and limbs; operating a chainsaw, chipper, handsaw, and pole saw in a safe manner; providing support for the City Forester (Arborist) and other crew members by controlling lowering ropes, limbs, and communicating with persons working above; job site cleanup; supplying tools for tree workers; working with the crew to complete tree care and landscaping jobs; driving a truck with a trailer; assisting with equipment maintenance; and adheres to safety standards at all times, including the use of PPE
Operates and ensures safe and proper operation and maintenance of the division s small and heavy equipment. Maintains proper documentation and record keeping.
Is open and approachable, supports team members, and promotes two-way communication and feedback.
Skills: Be able to work effectively in a team environment. Ability to safely operate, care for, and maintain equipment used in forestry. Ability to learn traffic control standards and safe operation within the right-of-way. Ability to perform skilled and semi-skilled tasks in repairing and maintaining all City Parks. Ability to implement an urban forestry plan with guidance.
Other Requirements: Possession of a valid driver s license. Possession of a CDL is highly desired. One season of forestry experience is preferred. A high school graduate or equivalent is preferred. Formal training and education in botany, forestry, or horticulture are highly desired. Work under strenuous and adverse conditions for extended periods, including at heights, in a bucket truck, in tree canopies, dirt, noise, rain, and snow. Able to stand for long periods (up to 8 hours). Ability to reach, bend, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds.
Wage: $15.08-$17.94
Shift: This is a full time position. May be required to work overtime, weekends, and holidays when assigned
