Naval Facilities Engineering Command AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC in Coronado, California

Summary You will serve as an AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC in the PUBLIC WORKS of NAVFAC SOUTHWEST. Responsibilities You will interpret drawings, manufacturer manuals, or work instructions to determine parts or equipment needed to repair air conditioning systems. You will inspect commercial and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning equipment for condition and operation. You will calibrate and balance water flow for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to obtain optimum heating and cooling performance. You will conduct research and inspect heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to determine cost effective repair solutions. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The selective placement factor is: Applicants must possess a Universal EPA Refrigerant Certification. You must attach a copy of this certification to your application package or you will be rated ineligible. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Working from blueprints, oral instructions, and work orders to plan and lay out work; 2) Installing and repairing a variety HVAC systems; and 3) Retro-fitting systems to use new refrigerants. I work on my own initiative under general supervision subject to occasional inspection. Physical Demands: Systems are large and heavy and require setting up motors, compressors, and associated equipment in place. The mechanic makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and ground level; and stoop, stretch, bend, and kneel for long periods. The work requires frequent carrying and setting-up of parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Occasionally may lift items weighing over 50 pounds with assistance. Working Conditions: The incumbent works both inside and outside, on top of tall buildings, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Personal protective equipment such as protective clothing, helmets, googles, respirators, etc. may be required to be worn when there is a possibility of exposure to toxic refrigerants during regular maintenance and repair or when making emergency repairs. Working conditions are considered in the evaluation of the job and do not meet criteria for compensation by environmental or hazard pay.
