Role Purpose

The intern will support the development of optical systems, devices, or metrology for Corning’s Advanced Optics business. This intern will use and develop skills in applied classical optics such as sequential and non-sequential raytracing and techniques to characterize optical performance of systems or components.

Key Responsibilities

  • The intern will oversee performing suitable background literature searches and executing a research plan

  • The intern would serve as an optical engineer on a larger product or metrology development project in collaboration with a diverse cross-functional team primarily in support of our Advanced Optics business

  • Project work may include optical design, stray light analysis, or advancing the state of optical metrology techniques

  • Learn new techniques and methods as needed to support the project objectives

  • Assist in the design of experiments, communicate observations, perform related measurements, collect, and summarize data

  • Document results by the end of the summer and give a final presentation of project outputs

Experiences/Education - Required

  • Pursuing MS or PhD in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or similar discipline

  • Understanding of classical optics; familiarity with a lens design program; proficient in Matlab

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively convey information

  • Experience working in a laboratory setting

  • Must be available for at least 10 weeks during Summer 2025 (May-August 2025 - this is flexible) with a graduation date of December 2025 or later

  • Be interested in working for Corning Incorporated after graduation, if a full-time job opportunity becomes available

Experiences/Education - Desired

  • Familiarity with SolidWorks

  • Experience working on interdisciplinary teams

​The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly. Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
