Under the direction of the Environmental, Health & Safety Manager, the Staff EHS Specialist provides technical expertise on safety, ergonomics, and occupational health matters. Will assist with the establishment, maintenance, and improvement of robust processes to identify, evaluate, mitigate, and control risk at workplace and environment. Evaluate, plan, and implement appropriate occupational safety, ergonomics, and occupational health program components, including development and delivery of training materials. Manages all safety, health and ergo matters at the plant. Support managing of OHSAS 18001 and ISO14001 Certification processes as requested. Drives progress of management action plans completion, providing technical support to ensure corporate, business franchise and the site goals are delivered. Assures all EHS related records and equipment is properly maintained, prepared, and submitted in a timely manner. Support EHS audits and inspections, recommendations, and process improvements. Support Occupational Health and Human Resources for Case Management Process to ensure proper response and recordkeeping requirements set by OSHA and J&J are met.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a comprehensive fire and explosion hazard identification/risk assessment – open flame processes and classified areas including inspection, testing and maintenance programs for critical fire safety equipment including container integrity, air-monitoring instruments, bonding and grounding devices, alarms and sprinkler systems, and portable fire extinguishers.

  • Establish, implement, and maintain a process for conducting a risk assessment for machine guarding to ensure that the performance of safety controls for newly acquired machinery is proportional to the risks as determined by use of the risk graph provided in ISO’s Safety of Machinery standard, #13849-1:2015.

  • Establish, implement, and maintain a written Hazardous Energy Control Program to protect personnel from unexpected startup, dangerous movement of machinery or equipment during service, maintenance, cleaning, or repair.

  • Establish, implement, and maintain appropriate electrical safe work practices in accordance with local requirements to utilize insulated tools and require electrical personal protective equipment based on the electrical hazards and risks at the facility.

  • Lead a Fall Prevention Site Assessment to identify the potential slip, trip and fall hazards of the facility, and to evaluate the risks associated with the identified hazards.

  • Establish, implement, and maintain a written Permit-to-Work system – formally authorized, competent, and suitably trained to issue work permits such as hot work, electrical, work at heights, confined spaces.

  • Establish, implement, and maintain a written Confined Space Entry Program (CSEP) and a facility-wide survey to identify and inventory all confined spaces including establishing, implementing, and maintaining a formal rescue plan for each PRCS entry. Establish, implement, and maintain a formal rescue plan to deal with non-routine working at heights situations.

  • Establish, implement, and maintain a written program for stand-alone warehouses including regulatory permits and inspections such a fire endorsement.

  • Facilitates compliance audits, assists management in conducting risk assessments, and participates on health and safety teams.

  • Participates as the lead health and safety representative in external audits and inspections by local government agencies.

  • Maintain the Management of Change Process according to the requirements of OSHA Process Safety Management Standards, and FDA Current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).

  • Coach / lead teams of EH&S Representatives and Standards Owners / SME’s as part of Integrated Ownership of Safety Standards (IOSS)

  • Perform EH&S assessments within projects and set up, lead and / or support EH&S projects (for example, use of chemical substances)

  • Represents EH&S department as an official delegate of EH&S Manager

  • Provide EH&S training on EH&S related topics.

Qualifications

Education:

  • A minimum of a University/bachelor’s degree or Equivalent comparable level (chemical, mechanical, electrical)

Experience and Skills:

Required:

  • A minimum of 4 Years Work Experience related experience in Medical Device, Pharmaceutical and/or Consumer industry is required.

  • Maintain knowledge of cGMPs, process safety practices, environmental standards, and industry/profession trends.

  • Carries out duties in compliance with all state and federal regulations and guidelines including FDA, EPA, and OSHA. Complies with all company and site policies and procedures.

  • Strong communication (written & verbal), problem-solving, influence, organizing, and time management skills.

  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to influence management.

  • Ability to provide support to multiple customers/business units.

  • Ability to anticipate customer needs.

  • Classroom instructor skills are required.

  • Ability to produce & maintain project schedules & budgets.

  • Interfacing – associates & local, State & Federal inspectors.

  • Ability to quickly interpret complex regulatory issues and provide recommended course of action.

Preferred:

  • Administrative (supervision) experience is preferred.

  • Certified Machine Safety Expert (CMSE)

Other:

  • This position is anticipated to have approximately 10% travel
