This Principal Scientist acts as a Medical Education and Training Study Director. This individual is responsible for planning, developing, and coordinating training programs for Medtronic personnel and healthcare provider customers. Obtains information and develops solutions needed to conduct medical education and training events at PRL that meet operating unit needs. Develops or facilitates the development of classes and courses for Medtronic employees and healthcare provider customers on topics such as Medtronic products, physiology, and anatomy using the latest information available. Responsible for teaching PRL classes and courses.

A Day in the Life:

Training and Education

Responsible for the initiation, design, development, execution, and implementation of scientific research projects and medical education and training courses and classes.

Study/Project Management

May coordinate interdepartmental activities and educational, training, or research efforts.


The study director serves as the single point of study control and is ultimately responsible for the compliance of the study to Good Laboratory Practices, the Animal Welfare Act, and all other applicable regulations.

Interfaces with quality assurance, regulatory committees (e.g. IACUC), and Regulatory Affairs regarding requirements and results of the study.

Reviews preclinical study data intended for regulatory submissions for compliance to Good Laboratories Practices.

Establishes department and facility standards for regulatory compliance.

Core Expertise

Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the art principles and theories and may contribute to scientific literature and conferences.

Investigates the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions and products.

May participate in development of patent applications.


Must be available to work variable hours and weekends to support business needs. Due to the nature of the work required by this position, weekend and evening coverage may be required.

Ability to travel up to 20%, including international travel, for training classes and other departmental business, as needed.

Exercises considerable latitude in determining deliverables of assignments, with limited oversight from manager.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree required

  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience

Nice to Have:

Bachelors degree in scientific field (e.g. Biology or Engineering), education, business or health profession (e.g. RN, MD, PharmD)

Broad knowledge of project management

Direct experience with a wide range of Medtronic devices and implantation techniques

Clinical experience

Experience with cadavers

Experience with training using medical simulators and emerging technology aids

Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a customer service focus

Flexible and able to adapt to changing requirements and priorities

Adept use of surgical instruments and surgical experience

Adult learning experience and knowledge of the education process

Familiarity with extended reality and its application to education and training programs

Strong communication/presentation skills, both in groups and individually

Direct experience with presenting/teaching

Medical devices and implantation techniques

Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology

Strong analytical and organizational skills required

Comfortable with animal research and working with human cadavers

Proficient in the use of PC software applications (Outlook; MS Word; Excel; PowerPoint)

Independent work ethics without appreciable work direction
