As the Corrosion Technician II, you will design and maintain cathodic protection on distribution and transmission pipelines. Monitors and conducts specialized corrosion tests, troubleshoot, design and recommend corrective actions to maintain cathodic protection that ensures compliance with CNP Operations manual, state and federal codes

Specifically, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Plan, coordinates, directs and participates in the installation of corrosion protection equipment, such as rectifiers and anodes, and also recoating of exposed pipe at bridge crossings or any other places where our system is, by design, subject to atmospheric corrosion.

  • Ensure compliance with all CNP Operations manual policies, State and D.O.T. Regulations. Assist in MNOPS audits and respond to questions concerning cathodic protection.

  • Conduct electrical potential and current tests of test point locations to determine levels of cathodic protection. Tests and maintains records of rectifiers and resistance bonds.

  • Based upon review and analysis of routine electrical test results, locates electrical isolation and continuity problems, determines corrective action and submits work orders to appropriate personnel for remedial action.

  • Maintain field records of cathodically protected distribution system, submits corrections, additions and deletions for input into the corrosion computer program, and prepares and updates cathodic protection maps.

  • Design cathodic protection systems for new and existing mains to reduce system maintenance costs and to comply with government regulations.

  • Make preliminary recommendations for main replacement or cathodic protection, due to corrosion, based on field inspections, pipe-to-soil potentials, soil resistively, leak history and other related information to ensure safety and compliance with government regulations.

  • Perform other Corrosion/Leak Detection activities as apparent or assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Requires a high school diploma or the equivalent

  • Requires a minimum of a CP1 N.A.C.E. Certification

  • CP Technician II requires a minimum of 2 years experience related to corrosion work on pipelines and other facilities.

  • Demonstrated ability to responsibly schedule daily work, perform various tests and communicate results with a minimum of supervision.

  • Must be willing and able to travel extensively throughout Minnesota.

  • Must have a valid State of Minnesota Class “C” driver’s license and a safe driving record.

  • Must be willing to successfully complete additional training as needed.

  • This is a safety-sensitive position, which requires a drug-screening test in compliance with Department of Transportation regulations.

  • This position requires a criminal record check, which must be satisfactory to the company.

Preferred Experience, Education and Skills:

  • Experience performing close interval surveys, reading test points, and rectifiers

  • Experience in corrosion work, drafting and gas distribution systems

  • Working knowledge of personal computer is desirable
