Summary:
Provides feasibility and manufacturability inputs to design engineers during concept development, for non-standard customer applications. Performs a wide variety of skilled electro-mechanical fabrication, machining and assembly operations in support of custom projects. Fits, aligns, calibrates and adjusts parts and mechanisms to meet tolerances and operating requirements, often for one-of-a-kind applications. May install machines at customer sites and perform customer acceptance tests. Trains customers and field engineers on operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of machines.
Principal Accountabilities:
Participates in preliminary design discussions, including brainstorming, concept generation, feasibility and manufacturability determinations.
Debugs prototype machines or subassemblies.
Analyzes operation and performance of machines during test run.
Makes changes as required, including fabricating (machining) replacement parts as necessary.
Use of machine tools such as CNC, mills, drill press, lathes, grinding etc.
Assembles and tests application tooling and integrates with machine.
Records test data using computerized spreadsheets to verify correct machine performance.
Organizes and files data, prints, materials and related paperwork, to be easily found and referred to.
Performs mechanical, electrical and pneumatic setups on custom applications.
Programs machines to perform applications to meet customer requirements.
Performs a variety of tasks which directly impact on-time delivery, profitability and customer order satisfaction.
Installs and troubleshoots completed products when delivered to customers.
Works to minimize process variation and maximize throughput on custom applications.
Assists customers with resolving mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, process and/or software problems associated with operation, programming, troubleshooting and maintenance of products.
Requests assistance from internal resources such as Engineering, Technical Specialists, or other functional experts to expedite problem resolution.
May train customers, field engineers and new employees on operation and maintenance of machines.
Minimum Requirements:
Associate's Degree with minimum 1-3 years of relevant experience OR Equivalent coursework in vocational OR military training and 3+ years related experience.
Relevant experience includes machine tools such as CNC, mills, drill press, lathes, grinding etc.
Robotics applications and/or circuit board assembly machinery is highly desirable, along with machining and part fabrication skills.
Requires strong customer relation skills in order to determine and satisfy customer needs.
Responsibility for Quality Procedures or Direct Product Quality:
Adheres to Universal Quality System policies and procedures and uses Total Cycle Time principles and standard problem solving tools to continuously improve work processes.
Physical Demands:
Ability to understand and interpret detailed documents and drawings.
Frequently required to access and manipulate various objects, tools, or controls.
The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to vibration.
The employee may occasionally lift heavy objects up to 50lbs.
Noise level in this environment is usually loud; where necessary, hearing protection equipment is provided.
Must be able to communicate clearly with fellow colleagues and customers.
The ability to travel to customer sites or technical conferences may be occasionally required.
