Job Summary

Our Energy & Resilience Division is currently seeking a Reservoir Engineering Intern (Summer 2025) . This position is onsite located in Columbus, Ohio .

Project Title

CarbonSAFE project

The Battelle-led CarbonSAFE intends to develop an integrated commercial-scale CO₂ storage complex through the compilation and analysis of existing data, drilling and characterization of a stratigraphic test well, identification and evaluation of potential technical and non-technical risks to develop mitigation plans, development of necessary plans to draft an Underground Injection Control Class VI permit, and evaluation of disadvantaged and environmental justice communities.

Responsibilities

As a reservoir engineer intern, the selected individual will work collaboratively to provide computational modeling and data analysis under the guidance of more senior reservoir engineers and geoscientists. The individual will support Battelle’s field demonstration and research projects dealing with CO2 geologic sequestration (CCS) programs. Responsibilities cover a large range of functions critical for this position including:

  • Perform reservoir engineering analyses and modeling of fluid injection into saline aquifers and hydrocarbon fields.

  • Use advanced subsurface modeling workflows.

  • Identify data gaps and guiding recommendations on field data acquisition programs.

  • Provide inputs to optimize storage site design and performance, including injection, and monitoring network configuration.

  • Provide inputs to Class VI injection permit applications and identifying project Area of Review.

Key Qualifications

  • Must be pursuing bachelor’s or advanced graduate degree in petroleum engineering, or a closely related field.

  • Must be 2nd year college student or higher at the start of the internship.

  • Strong background in computational subsurface flow and transport modeling with CCUS understanding.

  • Hands-on experience with applied reservoir engineering and modeling tools (using codes such as IMEX/GEM, ECLIPSE, TOUGH2).

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with ability to represent Battelle or its clients at conferences or public forums.

  • Collaborate with others in overall technical work.

  • Applicants to this position must be a U.S. citizen

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing MS or Ph.D. in Reservoir Engineering or closely related discipline with CCUS experience

  • Direct experience with Carbon Storage modeling and simulation and demonstrated understanding of multiphase fluid dynamics in the subsurface.

  • Strong background in reservoir engineering fundamentals and computational subsurface flow and transport modeling (using codes such as IMEX/GEM, ECLIPSE, TOUGH2).

  • Experience working on Department of Energy funded initiatives.
