Definition
The office of Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein is seeking qualified applicants for the position of full-time Assistant City Attorney in the Labor & Employment Section of the Civil Division. This position will provide legal advice to city departments, draft and review policies, and will handle arbitrations, trials, and appeals.
Requirements:
· Must currently be admitted to the Ohio bar and in good standing;
· Must have a minimum of 5 or more years of experience as a licensed attorney with prior experience advising clients on labor and employment law issues; participating in litigation and appellate advocacy in state and federal courts; and legal research and writing.
Knowledge of:
· Legal principles of civil law, local, state and federal labor and employment laws, the Ohio Revised Code, Columbus City Code, constitutional law, Federal & Ohio Rules of Civil Procedure, Federal & Ohio Rules of Evidence, and Ohio Rules of Professional Conduct;
· Legal, administrative, court, and judicial procedures, rules, terminology, methods, documents, practices, and objectives;
· Legal research tools and methods;
· English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and composition;
· Ability to think creatively and come up with solutions to issues;
· A bility to work effectively with persons from all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds;
· A bility to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
About the Civil Division:
Located at 77 N. Front, the Civil Division is responsible to defend the city and its employees in contract disputes, claims for personal injury or property damage, constitutional violations, wrongful death, tax disputes, and claims requesting money damages.

Under direction, is responsible for performing varied and difficult professional legal work involving extensive legal research and complex trials; performs related duties as required
Examples of Work
• Advises city departments regarding labor and employment law issues on pending matters and for compliance with applicable laws and regulations;
• Reviews and drafts policies and procedures, counsel city departments on labor contracts.
• Represents city departments in legal proceedings, labor arbitrations, administrative hearings and settlement negotiations;
• Prepares cases for hearing, trial and appeal; manages all aspects of discovery including depositions;
• Prepares pleadings, position statements and briefs and drafts legal documents such as policies, procedures, and settlement agreements.
• Conducts research and responds to legal inquiries from city departments;
• Responds to motions and confers with opposing counsel on assigned cases;
• Evaluates claims of or against the city for the purposes of recommending legal strategies or settlements;
• May serve as lead attorney in lawsuits, hearings and arbitrations.
