Position Summary

Family Support Specialists are family members of youth or adults who have been diagnosed with a mental health and/or substance abuse disorder. Per the state of OHMAS - Ohio FPS are individuals who self-identify a caregiver of an individual with behavioral health challenges (mental health/SUD) and has navigated services systems for that individual for at least one year on their behalf. They work alongside professional staff as equal colleagues in advocating for and supporting the needs of families served by the health plan through sharing content knowledge, technical and organizational expertise. Family Specialists have first-hand experience working with families who have intersected with the behavioral health service array. Using this personal history and experience with behavioral health challenges, family specialists guide, coach, and mentor family members so that they can better address needs they may have and to advocate for and support the needs of an individual with a behavioral health disorder. Family Support Specialists provide flexible services which are customized to the needs of the family member and are based on the family member’s choice as to what is a priority.

  • Provides direct outreach to the families to promote the identification of supports and services that aid the family unit to remain on a pathway to recovery. Assists families with understanding the treatment process, service choices, treatment plan participation, goal attainment and transitions in care.

  • Helps families identify their strengths so they can effectively support and empower themselves while their child is in care.

  • Provides ongoing support, encouragement, and assistance through sharing content knowledge, technical, and organization expertise.

  • Builds family and youth expertise through ensuring opportunities for direct feedback, coaching, and role modeling.

  • Provides coaching regarding a parent’s perspective and lessons learned from life experience.

  • Serves as a bridge to ensure that family and providers understand each other’s perspective and information.

  • Assists family members in understanding their support plan and associated services; provides peer-to-peer support and education to families who have questions, concerns or specific needs related to behavioral health and behavioral health’s relationship to Aetna Better Health.

  • Develops and/or disseminates relevant materials to educate the community about recovery and person-centered models of interventions.

  • FPS in Aetna aligns with CFPS is the same as CRPSS with the difference being the focus of support being on Family/Family Members to address their needs and goals of recovery for the Member if working with Member, and the Family here at Aetna.

  • Maintains documentation of contacts and activities.

  • Share coping strategies, wellness tools and other useful resources.

  • Educate healthcare professionals and providers on opportunities for improving and understanding the social determinants of health that may be impacting members health and treatment plan through various communication channels.

  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with the Aetna members, providers, nurse case managers, agency representatives, supervisors and office staff, from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Work to reduce cultural and socio-economic barriers between family members and institutions.

  • Identify gaps and opportunities to strengthen systems of care within the family members community and assists family member in utilizing community services, including scheduling appointments with social services agencies, (including transportation vendors), and assisting with completion of applications for eligible programs.

  • Collaborates with and serves as a complement to the clinical team to ensure the whole needs of the family unit are addressed using wrap-around like principles.

  • Completes in a timely fashion all documentation regarding day-to-day duties as outlined in team standards.

  • May be asked at times to provide educational opportunities to internal and external partners on Family peer supports and how they are incorporated into Aetna services as a whole.

Required Qualifications

  • Must reside in Northeast Region of Ohio

  • Must be willing to travel up to 50% - reimbursed mileage

  • 1-2 years experience in family advocacy

  • Experience using a computer and strong keyboard navigation skills including the use of MS Office Suite (Word and Excel applications)

  • Completion of a Certified Family Support Training Program is required within 90 days from start date. (Meets Eligibility Criteria: 1. Must be 18 years of age or older 2. Must be a self-identified parent or other family member who has lived experience with a care taking role of a youth family Member or Guardian of youth, and has received services related to a mental health, substance use, or co-occurring mental health and substance use disability from at least 1 child serving agency)

  • Trauma Inform Care Experience

  • Motivational Interviewing Experience

Education The highest level of education desired for candidates in this position is a High School diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent experience.

Pay Range

The typical pay range for this role is:

$18.50 - $35.29

This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above.
