Battelle Memorial Institute Air Quality Consultant in Columbus, Ohio

Battelle supports EPA’s mission to protect human health and the environment by measuring and reducing air pollution. Battelle assists EPA in a variety of key areas related to air quality, including developing, testing, and assessing the performance of new and existing air measurement technologies; evaluating and supporting the establishment and improvement of EPA’s national air monitoring networks; and assisting EPA in creating, implementing, maintaining, and improving robust quality systems. Battelle is looking to hire an Air Quality Consultant/Auditor to join our team.

We are seeking an Air Quality Consultant. This position is located in Columbus, OH .


  • Support laboratory and field site audits for federal air monitoring programs.

  • Carry out field and laboratory experiments required to address client’s needs

  • Perform data analyses, information assimilation, and data visualization.

  • Support the creation of high-quality written technical reports, technical and quality assurance guidance documents, and PowerPoint presentations in a timely manner.

  • Support the development of proposals to government and industrial clients.


  • A Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in chemistry, chemical engineering, or related field and at least 2-5 years of experience in the field of air assessment/air quality. Internship or Co-Op experience is applicable.

  • A background in quality assurance-related activities.

  • Experience with data analysis, visualization, and interpretation.

  • Ability to demonstrate a broad familiarity with air sampling and analysis of criteria pollutants such as ozone particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5, speciated PM, UFP [ultrafine particles], etc.) along with SVOCs (semivolatile organic compounds), VOCs (volatile organic compounds), carbonyls, PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), and particle-bound metals.

  • Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to travel domestically, including participating in field work, approximately one week per month.


  • A Master of Science (M.S.) in a related field of study.

  • Experience with the preparation of quality assurance project plans (QAPPs), standard operating procedures (SOPs), technical assistance documents (TADs), other quality systems and technical guidance documents that govern and describe air monitoring and sample analysis activities.

  • Experience in conducting onsite technical systems audits of air monitoring laboratories and sites, such as those in the NCore, SLAMS, NATTS, and PAMS national networks.
