Maury County Government Seasonal Park Maintenance Worker I in Columbia, Tennessee

Nature of Work This is responsible manual and semiskilled work involving the installation, construction, repair and maintenance of county owned parks and related structures and equipment. Activities associated with the job include seasonal mowing and weed eating of ball fields, parks and other recreational facilities, dragging, chalking and striping ball fields and courts, collecting trash and other debris from common areas and picnic facilities and assisting with the preventive maintenance and upkeep of facilities, machines and equipment. Additional activities include assisting with special holidays and public events, painting interior and exterior surfaces and performing light maintenance duties including plumbing, carpentry and minor electrical repairs. Job responsibilities require experience working for a recreation department or landscaping company, experience performing light maintenance activities, ability to consistently follow daily instructions, ability to interact effectively with the public and sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions. Job performance is evaluated by the Park Supervisor and/or Parks and Recreation Director through review of the level of support provided for park and recreation operations and activities, ability to consistently follow daily instructions and established policies and procedures, skill in operating mowing and grounds maintenance equipment and performing light maintenance activities and ability to interact successfully with co-workers and the public.

Illustrative Examples of Work -Mows grass in softball fields, baseball fields, common areas and other park and recreation facilities according to seasonal needs. -Weed eats around fences, trees, shrubbery flowerbeds etc. to enhance the appearance of public areas. -Plants trees, shrubbery and flowers in parks, around recreational facilities and in flowerbeds according to seasonal needs. -Top dresses fields and applies fertilizer, pesticides and insecticides when required. -Drags and chalks playing fields according to the types of games scheduled and age of the players. -Moves bases and pitching mounds in accordance with league requirements. -Assists with special events such as car shows, picnics and other activities when required. -Assists with performing routine preventive maintenance practices and minor repairs on lawn equipment and machinery. -Collects trash and other debris from playing fields, park and recreational facilities and other public areas. -Assists with preparing buildings and pavilions for special events and activities by setting up chairs and tables, emptying trash receptacles, etc. -Assists with stripping and waxing floors and installing floor tile when necessary. -Assists with cleaning restrooms, shelters and other recreational facilities when required. -Puts up and takes down Christmas decorations, lights and other seasonal decorations. -Paints the interior and/or exterior of building and other structures located in ball field complexes, parks and recreational facilities and other public areas. -Performs light carpentry, plumbing and electrical repairs on park and recreational facility structures and buildings. -Assists with building dugouts, installing and repairing fences and replacing lights on ball fields. -Performs related duties as required.

Necessary Requirements of Work Ability to read and write at the eighth grade level; experience performing lawn maintenance or landscaping duties; experience performing light maintenance activities including painting, carpentry and building maintenance; ability to consistently follow directions and established policies and procedures; sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions; good interpersonal skills; or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience to provide the follow ng knowledge, abilities and skills: -Knowledge of the safe operation of machinery and equipment utilized for lawn maintenance and landscaping activities including commercial mowers, weed eaters, tractors, edging equipment, etc. -Knowledge of various league requirements for baseball including length between bases, distance and height of the pitching mound, etc. -Knowledge of the proper use and application of pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers and grass seed. -Knowledge of the safety precautions and recommended first aide practices associated with frequently utilized chemicals including Material Safety Data Sheet information. -Knowledge of the tools and practices associated with light maintenance activities including carpentry, plumbing and minor electrical repairs. -Knowledge of the tools, equipment and practices associated with the painting of exterior and interior surfaces. -Ability to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions. -Ability to consistently follow all daily instructions and established policies and procedures. -Ability to interact effectively with co-workers, local civic groups, league officials and the public. -Ability to safely operate all machinery and equipment utilized on the job and follow existing safety precautions. -Skill in the use of power equipment and machinery utilized on the job including mowers, weed eaters, tractors, edging equipment, fertilizer, pesticide and insecticide sprayers, chalking and dragging equipment, etc. -Skill in the use of hand and power tools used to perform light maintenance activities including painting, carpentry, plumbing and minor electrical repairs.

Necessary Special Requirements -Possession of a valid Tennessee Drivers License and the ability to be insured at standard vehicle liability rates.

Physical Requirements -This is heavy work requiring considerable static, explosive, dynamic and trunk strength and requiring the exertion of up to 80 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects -Work requires considerable flexibility, mobility and speed of limb movement -Work requires considerable effort and stamina -Work requires both gross body equilibrium and coordination for balancing, bending, stooping, kneeling and walking -Work requires arm/ hand steadiness and manual and finger dexterity -Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word -Hearing is required to perceive information in both quiet and noisy environments and determine the direction of sounds -Visual acuity is required for the inspection of small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of office equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, color differentiation, and observing general surroundings and activities -The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, temperature extremes, noise, vibrations and slippery surfaces
