Position : HVAC Design Engineer – Columbia Falls

Reports To: Mechanical Design Engineering Manager

The HVAC Design Engineer is responsible for specifying and generating novel designs of mobile/modular-based HVAC systems. The HVAC Design Engineer is responsible for assumptions, calculations, and generation of system design (including specification/design/selection of sub-components). A successful candidate will be able to adapt and innovate within the unique design challenges of Nomad’s industry and clientele. All steps within the HVAC Design Engineer’s work portfolio must meet or exceed Nomad GCS’s standards of excellence.

Essential Functions/Responsibility

  • Design and specify Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) solutions which align with all applicable industry standards (NFPA, ANSI, ASHRAE, etc.) for mobile/modular telecommunication command centers including:

  • Thermal load/occupancy/cycle/power calculations combining client specifications and Nomad internal build standards (hand calculations and/or computer simulations).

  • System-wide or sub-component selection from COTS available components (coils, compressors, etc.).

  • Mechanical design of air-handling systems in difficult mounting locations (3D SolidWorks).

  • Prove successful designs with testing of prototypes including new systems and technologies.

  • Create designs powered by AC or DC electrical and may use R134a or R410a in 1-ton through 10-ton+ capacity systems and must withstand harsh thermal/vibratory/corrosive environments.

  • Create complete 3D models of each system. This will include top level assemblies, sub-assemblies and parts as needed, which require:

  • All assigned properties for use within analyses.

  • Complete and accurate BOMs.

  • Accurate and manufacturing-ready drawings, and design with optimized efficiency, and manufacturability.

  • Communication with Engineers within the department to identify and resolve differences between Electrical schematics, Mechanical drawings, and client requirements.

  • Create, implement, supervise, and document tests verifying designs meet customer requirements.

  • Complete all documentation and drawings required for Production within established time frames as agreed upon by the Operations team.

  • Communicate with other Engineers and Designers, Project Management, Production Leads to identify and implement improvement opportunities at the project level as well as a company level.

  • Communicate with vendors and clients to troubleshoot designs, get information on new designs, and obtain specifications/drawings/models of components.

  • Track and record work hours for each specific project daily.

  • Understand the significance of the Nomad Core Values and display a demonstrated willingness to apply them.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by Management.

    Basic Knowledge Desired

  • Knowledge of HVAC industry codes and technologies, thermal loading, electrical loading, sheet metal design, and fluid dynamics.

  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.

  • Knowledge of raw material, production processes (welding, machining, grinding/cutting), quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.

  • Previous knowledge gained from experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD), SolidWorks preferred.

  • Previous knowledge and experience engineering designs using sheet metal, weldments, and simulations.

  • Must be comfortable and knowledgeable using Microsoft Office.

    Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and arms to finger, handle, feel, reach, or operate objects, tools, or controls.

  • The employee is required to sit or stand for most of the workday.

  • The employee is required to work with Production on the manufacturing floor and must be able to walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to distinguish colors.

    Working Environment

  • The work environment is typically an indoor office environment, long periods of computer-related work, constant interruptions, and high levels of stress at times.

  • All Team Members must wear provided OSHA approved eye protection at all times in manufacturing areas. The employee will be required to wear provided safety eyewear throughout the performance of their duties.

  • The employee is always expected to maintain a professional image and demeanor on company property and/or while representing the company off-site.

    Qualifications & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required with AS, AAS, or BS in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology, or similar field of study strongly desired.

  • Minimum 2 years of verifiable work history in HVAC design with additional preference given to HVAC engineering in a custom manufacturing environment.

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed may be substituted for the above requirements.

  • Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks or similar) and file management desired.

  • Professional Engineer’s Licensure not a requirement but is beneficial.
