Job Summary

Hiring Range: $22.000 - $25.000

(commensurate with qualifications)

This position has an anticipated work schedule of Monday – Thursday, 6:30am – 5:00pm, subject to change. Under FLSA guidelines, this position is non-exempt.

Performs welding using a variety of welding equipment and methods on vehicles, equipment, auxiliary equipment, and attachments. Fabricates or modifies parts for vehicles, equipment, and attachments. Observes vehicle, shop, and equipment safety procedures as well as Fleet Management's policies and procedures.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Welds equipment and materials to last the life cycle of the vehicle/equipment, using various welding methods. Selects appropriate materials, equipment, and methods for efficient and effective completion of welding and fabrication tasks.

  • Performs structural reinforcement, such as bracing, straightening, gusset setting, redesigning, and strengthening.

  • Fabricates or modifies items to fit equipment accurately, such as plows and sanders, harness attachments, hydraulic components, tanks, and power take-off.

  • Disassembles and reassembles materials, parts, and equipment. Removes and repairs all applicable parts, including mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, fuel, and cooling systems.

  • Follows all guidelines set forth in the Fleet Management Standard Operating Procedures (FMSOP).

  • Uses laptop and existing database to input accurate and detailed descriptions of daily work activities. Responsible for the security and authorized use of laptops.

  • Ensures work area and other shop areas are kept clean and organized to prevent accidents and injuries.

  • Responds to El Paso County emergencies; subject to after-hours call-out.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Supervision Exercised:This classification does not have supervisory authority and requires no supervision or direction of others.

Supervision Received:Receives intermittent supervision. This classification normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. Regular direction, guidance, and coaching from supervisor is expected. There is a choice of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties. Performance reviewed periodically.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of OSHA, State, and Federal requirements, standards, and mandates.

  • General knowledge of all DOT equipment operations so that welded modifications do not impede the equipment's movement of operation preferred.

  • Must successfully pass the welding practical exam.

  • Ability to safely and effectively operate shop tools (i.e., lathe, drill press, chop saw, stationary grinder, hand-held grinders, port-a-power, hand tools, hydraulic press, welding truck, steam cleaner, forklift, and hydraulic jacks).

  • Ability to weld materials one inch in depth and beyond; ability to weld in horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.

  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with County staff, customers, and the public. Ability to provide excellent customer service.

  • Ability to use standard office equipment, including computer, fax machine, copier, and telephone. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

Required Education & Experience

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • One year of experience in welding and fabrication.

Licenses/Certificates

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

  • Welding Certification preferred.

Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle record check, drug screen, and physical examination.

Work Conditions

Duties are primarily performed in a shop environment with some work performed in the field. Work requires standing, bending, reaching, walking, and climbing throughout the day; some work is performed in confined spaces. Work environment may include exposure to welding gases and hazardous materials such as lubricants, solvents, corrosives, and fuels. Work is performed with potentially dangerous equipment and tools. Subject to on-call after hours duty to respond to El Paso County emergencies. Must be able to safely lift and carry up to 75 pounds. This is a temporary position typically not to exceed five months.
