If this sounds like you, El Paso County Department of Public Works - Fleet Division, is inviting you to apply for the Public Works Technician – Part Time position.

Hiring Range: $20.000 – $20.500

(commensurate with qualifications)

The average workday hours are flexible, 25 hours per week between 6:30am - 5:00pm Monday - Thursday; weekend and evening hours may be required. Schedule may be subject to change. Under FLSA guidelines, this position is non-exempt.

Under direct supervision, assists with and performs a variety of unskilled or limited semi-skilled maintenance and construction duties requiring the use of various small equipment and hand tools. Performs grounds maintenance and removes debris from County rights-of-way. Assists Public Works Divisions as needed, such as Fleet Management, Resource Management, or Customer Service.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Performs unskilled or limited semi-skilled labor using various hand and power tools, including shovels, picks, and axes, to perform public works maintenance tasks. Loads and unloads small equipment and materials. Carries job materials, such as bags of cement.

  • Performs grounds maintenance, including cutting grass with mowers and small equipment; trims trees, shrubbery and other vegetation.

  • Removes debris from County rights-of-way. Collects trash from containers.

  • Performs routine and preventative maintenance and cleaning of assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools.

  • May perform unskilled work in the Fleet body and weld shop, such as cleaning and maintaining the shop or assisting with repairs or painting of vehicles and equipment.

  • Assists with warehouse duties, including material handling and inventory.

  • Provides departmental support for special events and other activities.

  • Maintains safe, clean, and organized facility/work areas; complies with safety and security regulations.

  • May be required to respond to provide non-hazardous support with on-call after-hours emergencies.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Supervision Exercised:This classification does not have supervisory authority and requires no supervision or direction of others.

Supervision Received:Receives intermittent supervision. This classification normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. Regular direction, guidance, and coaching from supervisor is expected. There is a choice of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties. Performance reviewed periodically.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of grounds maintenance, hand, and power tools preferred.

  • Must observe and follow safety procedures and precautions.

  • Ability to safely operate equipment based upon assignment.

  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.

  • Must communicate and work effectively with County staff and the public. Ability to provide excellent customer service.

  • Ability to work independently with supervision and in a team environment.

  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

Required Education & Experience

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.

Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, drug screen, and physical examination.

Work Conditions

Duties are performed outdoors in varying weather conditions. Requires physical effort to perform frequent lifting, bending, reaching, and climbing. Physical hazards may be present when mixing or working with chemicals and working with or near power tools and motorized equipment. May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. Must be able to safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds. This is a part-time position regularly working up to 25 hours per week.
