GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

This position reports to the Supervisor of Student Life Programs, and is responsible for providing support to students who are Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing, who are Blind/Low Vision, or who have dual sensory needs, and works with the Student Life Department, Gottlieb, School for the Deaf, and Adams, School for the Blind, to coordinate the school-wide activity calendar, activity planning and scheduling, and athletic calendar.

JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Manage the After-School Activity program and annual community events

  • Create and schedule intramural , pee wee, open gym, and informal tournament events and activities

  • Develop monthly calendars to include athletics, after school activities, school wide events, and intramurals

  • Coordinate, facilitate, and supervise structured activities for residential students during inclement weather school closures

  • Oversees Student Body Government, Individual school sponsors, Senior sponsors and supports planning for annual events including Spirit Week, Homecoming, and Prom.

  • Leads fundraising efforts for athletics and extracurricular events

  • Arrange sport schedules and coordinate officials and volunteers for home games

  • Complete event forms for ALL on campus events and off campus events

  • Attend and assume responsibility for athletic games/concessions/admissions/gym set up and clean up/etc., for all home games and events

  • Attends away athletic activities and events or schedules an Admin on Duty to take the place of the Athletic Director.

  • Communicate program calendars and information with parents, students, teachers, coaches, staff, food service, and transportation

  • Report student health concerns and injuries to Student Health Center and Supervisor of Student Life .

  • Plan high school athletic programs two (2) years at a time in relation to Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA)/Black Forest League (BFL) and school calendars

  • Attend BFL/CHSAA and required meetings as they relate to the Athletic Program

  • Attend state, regional, and national meetings (NDIAA), whenever possible

  • Assist in sharing with the Student Life Department Program Assistant, Student Life Program Supervisor and Public Relations and Communications Manager with social media, website information as it relates to Athletics or Student Life Activities .

  • Act as a tournament manager for all league and tournament playoff activities that are assigned to the school

  • Maintain file of student-athlete records to include physical examination forms; rosters; eligibility forms; accomplishments and awards

  • Collaborate with Supervisor of Student Life to post all coaching positions, facilitate interviews, give end of season reviews on each coach and make recommendations for hire and dismissal of coaching positions.

  • Maintain and inventory all sporting equipment and uniforms

  • Oversee the Athletics Department budget reports. Plan fundraiser events. Work with SL Department Assistant.

  • Complete trainings and stay current with CSDB staff training requirements such as: First Aid/CPR, Safety Care, background check, and CDE state vehicle operating testing/requirements in addition to CHSAA requirements

  • Maintain files for all coaches associated with the Athletic program. Such files must contain, athletic coach permit, CPR/First Aid certification, Safety Care and verification of criminal background check.

  • Coordinate statewide opportunities for athletic and activity camps for students, including those who do not attend CSDB. Establish on-campus or regional camps that provide an opportunity for participation from students across the state increasing awareness of the programs and services we have to offer.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

QUALIFICIATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in education, Special Education, Physical Education, Athletics and sports program management or a related field from an accredited college or university with specialization in physical or recreational activities preferred. Five (S) years of experience in activity planning/recreational/athletics may be substituted for educational requirement.

  • Two (2) years of professional experience and/or experience coordinating/ working in the area of recreation/athletics. Experience working with children who are deaf/hard-of-hearing and/or blind/low vision is highly preferred

KNOWLEDGE. SKILLS, ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of facilities, playing fields, and sporting equipment maintenance.

  • Knowledge of eligibility rules within CHSAA/BFL and CSDB policies, as they relate to athletics and intramural programs

  • Ability to use Microsoft Office, Excel, Power-Point, and willingness to learn other software/programs used including CSDB website, CHSAA website, and Arbiter One

  • Ability to communicate effectively and exhibit strong interpersonal and leadership skills

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to support the after-school and athletic activities as needed

  • Ability and willingness to travel (within the state and sometimes out of the state of Colorado} to support the needs and activities of the Athletic Department

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to and is evaluated by the Supervisor of Student Life Programs

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Full-time; scheduled to work 210 days (0.92 FTE) during the academic year (August through June) Employment is at-will, with no actual, expressed or implied contract

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is performed in a typical school environment and involves mostly light to medium physical activity, typically requiring exertion of up to 50 lbs. of force and usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. Typically, workers are required to climb stairs, bend, reach, and handle objects, and use fingers to operate computer and/or typewriter keyboard. Work requires expression or exchange of ideas and the ability to receive detailed information. Work requires ability to compare, compile, analyze, and coordinate date/information; ability to instruct/ train others; and ability to utilize effective communication and interpersonal skills.

    The position of the Athletic Director is assigned to work with students, staff and others who are Deaf/hard-of-hearing and requires proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at the Advanced (3+) skill level or above, as demonstrated by an appropriate assessment tool and according to school policy/procedures. Please check one box below to describe / indicate your current level of ASL proficiency.

  • SUPERIOR - Able to have a fully shared conversation, with in-depth elaboration for both social and work topics.

  • ADVANCED - Able to have a generally shared conversation with good, spontaneous elaboration for both social and work topics.

  • INTERMEDIATE - Able to discuss with some confidence routine social and work topics within a conversational format with some elaboration; generally 3-5 sentences in length.
