Description

Under general supervision of the Traffic Signs and Markings Supervisor, the Signs & Markings Technician performs fabrication, installation, maintenance and repair of City signs to include, but not limited to, regulatory warning and guide signs, and installing and maintaining pavement markings and other traffic control devices.

Principal Duties

  • Fabricate, install, maintain, and repair traffic-related devices including regulatory, warning and guide signs.

  • Track inventory for traffic-related devices, to include entering and tracking signs data using computer software and geographic information systems (GIS) and maintaining inventory of supplies and equipment.

  • Inspect traffic signs and perform maintenance to bring deficient signs up to current standards and regulations, such as, but not limited to, ensuring adequate sight distance around regulatory signs and intersection clearances.

  • Assist in the installation of overhead signs on signal mast arms as needed.

  • Install and maintain pavement markings, to include preparing sites for markings and performing pavement marking procedures for crosswalks, school zones, stop bars, etc.

  • Set up traffic work zones, to include traffic barricades, cone transition lanes and traffic warning signs when conducting sign/marking work in traffic areas, which may include high volume and high speed roadways.

  • Perform other related tasks and duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required: High School Diploma or G.E.D., (1) year experience with computers or additional technical training in a field related to area of assignment, and one (1) year experience related to area of assignment such as traffic work zone set up and operating power tools; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job

Valid Class “C” driver license issued by the State of Texas

Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions

Knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD)

Ability to obtain International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Signs & Pavement Markings Technician Level I Certification within one (1) year of hire

Ability to respond after hours to emergencies.

Availability and willingness to work rotation schedule for Standby and On-Call after hour support which includes evenings, weekends, holidays, and catastrophic weather events.

Must live within 45 minutes response radius from College Station City limits.

  • Work is performed in an outside environment in which incumbents are required to utilize hand tools, post hole diggers, gasoline powered auger, gas powered striping machine, propane heat torch and may be exposed to physical hazards, health and safety risks while working in and around moving/high speed vehicular and high volume pedestrian traffic.

  • Routine work assignments typically involve working in extreme weather conditions; heat, rain, and frigid temperatures for an extended period of time.

  • Routine work assignments typically involve some combination of walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling, as well as standing for extended periods of time; and requires the necessary physical strength/ability/dexterity to lift up to 80 pounds

  • Drug Screening: Due to the safety and/or security sensitive nature of this position, individuals shall be subject to pre-employment or pre-placement drug and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy.
