Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Special Collections Archivist in Cold Spring Harbor, New York

Position Description

Join us at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and be part of a dynamic team dedicated to preserving and showcasing groundbreaking scientific history. We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Special Collections Archivist to manage and enhance our esteemed collections, including the Genentech Center for the History of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, the BGI Nobel Laureates Archives, and the Rare Book Collection. This role offers an exceptional opportunity to work with historically significant materials that trace the development of modern molecular biology over the past 130 years.

Position Responsibilities

  • Reference Services: Provide comprehensive reference assistance to both internal and external patrons. Conduct in-depth research upon request and provide high-quality images for publication needs. Oversee the distribution of image permissions and manage related administrative tasks.
  • Collection Management: Accession new materials, process collections, and maintain accurate finding aids. Ensure preservation through appropriate storage and digitization. Update and enhance archival descriptions within ArchivesSpace.
  • Digital Collections: Develop and manage workflows for digital image and metadata ingestion. Maintain and track data within spreadsheets and coordinate with contractors on database and digital preservation system customization.
  • Genentech Center & BGI Nobel Laureates Collections: Manage collections from the Genentech Center and BGI Nobel Laureates Archives. Create and encode finding aids, and provide reference services for these significant scientific collections.
  • Rare Books Collection: Oversee the Rare Books Collection, including over 2,500 volumes on molecular biology, genetics, anthropology, and more. Collaborate with library staff to enhance usability and design projects for the collection.
  • Outreach and Promotion: Expand the Archives' online presence through social media, blogs, and exhibitions. Design and implement exhibitions and promotional materials. Collaborate on grant writing and collection development projects, including the development of a Women in Science collection.
Position Requirements

Education: Master's degree in Library Science (MLS) from an ALA-accredited institution.
Experience: Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in an archival setting, including processing, arranging, describing, and providing reference for archival/ manuscript collections.
Skills: Strong computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Experience with photo editing software (e.g., Photoshop). Knowledge of descriptive standards such as Dublin Core, EAD, and XML. Familiarity with Content Management Systems (e.g., ArchivesSpace) and Digital Asset Management Systems. Experience in grant writing and a track record of working in multidisciplinary teams is preferred. Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Strong commitment to professional development and ability to adapt to changing environments. Capability to prioritize and manage multiple projects effectively with minimal supervision. Experience with or willingness to learn about current trends in rare books and manuscripts.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range and/or hourly rate listed is a good faith determination of potential base compensation that may be offered to a successful applicant for this position at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future.
