    The Training:

    You will participate in a structured training program that includes both hands-on and classroom education. Applicants must obtain a valid Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) with tank endorsement prior to being hired if they are selected to participate in this program.

    Length of Training: Registered Apprentices must successfully complete at least 26 weeks of training, which includes approximately 4 weeks of CDL training. Once completed you will advance into a Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprentice 2 classification

    In order to advance, you must reside within 20 miles of the above posted locations and possess the following:

  • Evaluation rating of good or better

  • Possess/Attain a Commercial Driver’s License with Tank Endorsement

  • A valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC)

    The Role:

As a Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprentice 1, you will:

  • Learn to operate and maintain various types of highway construction and maintenance equipment.

  • Assist in performing a variety of tasks related to highway maintenance including, but not limited to, snow and ice removal, pothole repair, and drainage maintenance.

  • Strictly adhere to safety guidelines and protocols to ensure a safe working environment.

  • Collaborate with experienced transportation professionals to successfully implement all training measures.

  • Develop the skills necessary to become a qualified CDL Driver and proficient in highway maintenance operations.

  • Complete assigned tasks with a high level of precision and efficiency.

    $52,670-$68,781/ Yearly

    Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprentice 2

    (After successful completion of 26 weeks of training & additional requirements)

    $55,109 -$71,786/ Yearly

    Transportation Maintainer 2*

    $57,724-$74,956/Yearly

    PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

    In the Department of Transportation this class is used as the initial entry classification for a structured development program designed to prepare incumbents for opportunities in transportation related careers. This class is accountable for receiving on-the-job training in construction and maintenance skill sets.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Receives training to perform tasks including, commercial vehicle operation, construction, maintenance, and repair of state roadsides, roadways, or bridges;

  • Receives on-the-job training to supplement prior vocational or technical training and work experience;

  • Through on-the-job training and classes learns the processes and materials used in the construction and maintenance trades;

  • Learns and applies safety protocols;

  • Performs increasingly difficult and skilled tasks requiring application of learned highway and road maintenance skills including, construction maintenance, flagging, traffic control, routine mechanical repair and maintenance, equipment/vehicle operation and maintenance, minor repair work, landscaping, wildlife hazard control, preventive maintenance, removal of debris and dangerous items from roadways;

  • Assists with installation of guardrails and highway barriers;

  • Assists in snow removal operations;

  • Performs duties related to similar trade areas as required;

  • Performs related duties as required.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Basic knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods, and practices of transportation maintenance and construction;

    Any experience and training which would provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Work Experience with hand and power tools

  • Work Experience with landscaping or property maintenance

  • Work Experience with construction techniques

  • Work Experience with snow removal

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicants must obtain a valid Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) with the tank endorsement and a valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC) prior to hire into this position.

  • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess or acquire appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness in order to perform the duties of the class. A physical examination, including drug testing, will be required prior to hire.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and to risk of injury from equipment.
