Job Description

The process of audit testing involves using a variety of methods to examine controls in place at an organization:

  • Inquiry: Auditors ask management and staff about the controls in place through interview-style questioning.

  • Observation: Auditors watch tasks and operations to see how controls are implemented.

  • Examination: Auditors review documentation and logs to determine if controls are operational.

  • Re-performance: Auditors independently perform the control to validate outcomes.

  • Computer-assisted audit techniques (CAAT): Auditors use technology to analyze large amounts of data automatically.

These methods are often used in combination to fully test a control. The order of the methods from lowest to highest complexity is inquiry, observation, examination, re-performance, and CAAT.

Hard Skills

  • Proficiency in Excel and PDF software

  • Technical skills in accounting, auditing, data analysis, and compliance

  • Experience using electronic workpapers

  • Experience performing audit procedures on scheduled audit projects in accordance with approved audit programs

  • Experience assembling and maintaining comprehensive internal auditing work papers
