Case Western Reserve University K-9 Handler in Cleveland, Ohio

POSITION OBJECTIVE 

Under general supervision, the K-9 officer is responsible for providing law enforcement and protection services to the campus community. Provide general police services, emergency response, answer calls for service and provide other services in keeping with the mission and values of Case Western Reserve University and the Division of Public Safety. Exhibit a proactive, service-oriented approach to the provision of community-based policing services to the faculty, staff, students and visitors at Case. Works in tandem with a trained EOD K-9. K-9 Handler must provide daily care, both during and after work hours, manage veterinary care, for the assigned K-9. Must be available for call-outs as required. Work most special events occurring on campus with the need to work flexible schedules in addition to accomplishing other duties as required. K-9 Handlers are required to accomplish other duties as required in the area of community action events, training, and patrol. Performs all Law Enforcement responsibilities with or without K-9 assistance.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Patrol assigned geographic area of campus by foot or designated vehicle.  Respond to medical, fire and criminal emergencies per established guidelines. Coordinate response with campus and external resources and responders. (30%)
  2. Investigate criminal and suspicious activity. Enforce federal, state, local laws and ordinances as well as university policies as required through arrest, summons, citation or other approved disposition. Conduct initial investigations, interviews, collect evidence and conduct searches of persons and property. (30%)
  3. Prepare written reports and documentation for activities such as criminal and non-criminal incidents, arrests, use of force, evidence collection, vehicle accidents and daily shift activity. Testify in court as required. (20%)
  4. Maintain security of university property by opening and closing buildings, identifying and taking corrective action on unsafe conditions and hazards in and around all university owned buildings, parking lots, garages and controlled property. Respond to various security, door and environmental alarms. (8%) 
  5. Provide security for university events. Other security or service related duties as assigned by ranking officers. (8%)

     

NONESSENTIAL SKILLS

  1. Assure all departmental equipment used is properly maintained and in good working order. (2%)
  2. Provide general information and assistance to the university community. (2%)

     

CONTACTS

Department: Frequent contact with departmental staff to exchange information.

University: Frequent contact with university staff and faculty to exchange information. 

External: Frequent contact with members of the public when passing through university property and visiting public venues owned by the university. Routine contact with police, fire and EMS personnel from the cities of Cleveland and Cleveland Heights and University Circle Police Department. Contact with other local, county, state and federal agencies may be required to exchange information.

Students: Frequent contact with university students. 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

No direct supervision of staff employees, but may be asked to provide guidance or supervision to university security officers, student auxiliary and Case EMS personnel.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 2 years of work experience required. Customer relations and community engagement experience preferred. Familiarity with college campus environment is preferred.

Education/Licensing/Certification: High school education required. Bachelor¿s degree preferred. Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) certification required. Must be able to obtain and maintain LEADS certification upon hire. Must be 21 years of age at t
