Fairview Hospital's Dialysis Unit is an advanced dialysis unit that offers a range of dialysis services, including inpatient hemodialysis, inpatient peritoneal dialysis, and care-based dialysis. Caregivers on this unit use state-of-the-art dialysis technology and follow our 'patient-first' methodology to deliver exceptional care to renal patients. Dialysis is a treatment provided to all types of patients in all areas of the hospital. As a Dialysis Technician, you will provide intermittent hemodialysis (IHD) care to patients in the immediate presence and under the direct supervision of an RN.

Responsibilities:

  • Clarifies any prescribed dialysis care regimen for a patient when the technician believes that the regimen is inaccurate.

  • Consults with an appropriate licensed practitioner to clarify the prescribed dialysis care regimen.

  • Notifies the practitioner when the technician decides not to follow the prescribed dialysis care regimen or direction.

  • Documents that the practitioner was notified of the decision not to follow the direction or the prescribed dialysis care regimen, taking any action necessary to assure the safety of the patient.

  • Administers medications when delegated by a registered nurse or a licensed physician as outlined by the Ohio Revised Code).

  • Shares responsibility with the technologist team in preparation of water, dialysate and performs other technical duties.

  • Communicates with the water company when problems arise and arranges for the disinfections of the water rooms.

  • Assists with basic equipment usage issues and troubleshooting.

  • Manages doping Potassium in acid concentrate jugs and refills jugs with needed dialysis solutions.

  • Conducts 5S zone responsibilities.

  • Teaches and supports other employees and personnel.

  • Assists with research projects.

  • Monitors and charts the central water system.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Certifications:

  • Must be certified by the current State as a Certified Dialysis Technician (CDT) and maintain current certification.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA).

Complexity of Work:

  • Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of one year prior Intermittent Hemodialysis (IHD) experience required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.

  • Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.

  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours.

  • Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids on a daily basis.

  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
