JOB TITLE: Teacher Consultant for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

DEPARTMENT: Special Education

REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent for Special Education

SALARY RANGE: According to the Terms of the Master Agreement for AFT.

JOB SUMMARY: To provide consultative educational services to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and to support their placement in general education and/or special education; to assist staff and families with programming to improve students' success in the general curriculum.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned by Administration.

  • Follow all established policies, practices, and procedures in terms of duties and responsibilities of the position as delegated by the Assistant Superintendent for Special Education or delegated supervisor.
  • Identify and assist with programs for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  • Provide pre-referral consultation to local school district personnel.
  • Serve as a collaborative member of a multidisciplinary evaluation team (when assigned by local educational agency coordinators or supervisors and may function as a coordinator of the team) and provide information on proactive strategies for ASD students.
  • Provide consultation to general and special education staffs concerning students with ASD.
  • Provide support services to supplement regular class instruction (to include planning, programming, coordinating and providing special education and general education instruction to students and/or teachers).
  • Select and adapt materials to implement supplementary aids and services in general and special education instruction.
  • Participate as a member of IEPT meetings.
  • Develop effective transition plans for ASD students.
  • Collaborate with the family of a student with ASD through personal contact, with an understanding the child's educational, social adjustment and vocational needs.
  • Participate in the development of an annual individualized education program for each student determined to be eligible for ASD services.
  • Participate in cooperative planning with general education teachers, special education personnel and parents of involved students with disabilities.
  • Participate in the ASD START training modules.
  • Maintain accurate records as required by the regional educational service district and local educational agency.
  • Effectively manage time and energy to assure completion of all responsibilities within required timelines.
  • Adhere to district and policies, school rules and procedures as established by the RESD and each local educational district.
  • Maintain all aspects of confidentiality as it pertains to students, families and other protected information.
  • Perform other assigned duties and responsibilities not in conflict with Board policy, conditions of employment, and as outlined in the negotiated Master Agreement as assigned by the Director of Special Education and/or delegated supervisor.
