Corning’s Environmental Technologies segment manufactures ceramic substrates and filter products for emissions control in mobile and stationary applications around the world.

Scope of Position

In this role, the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Engineer will assist or perform duties as defined by EHS Management. Duties shall include, but are not limited to, promoting an environmentally safe and healthy work environment for all employees throughout the manufacturing facility and maintaining compliance with all applicable federal, state and local environmental and safety regulations. Ensure that safety and health performance is communicated to the facility employees and the corporate environmental, health and safety organizations. Assist in developing and driving enforcement of all corporate EHS policies, standards and procedures and responding to EHS emergencies, investigating accidents, and recommends corrective and preventive action.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day direction and engage with employees at various levels including management, engineering, contractors, union workforce and operations to maintain EH&S compliance.

  • Perform routine industrial and hazardous waste management activities such as scheduling and waste hauling oversight, manifest tracking and filing.

  • Process Safety Management and emergency response.

  • Assist in job risk analysis, hazard identification, evaluation and control, and appropriate risk assessment with risk mitigation using current and new processes and equipment.

  • Assist in leading the site EHSS audits including ISO 14001, Corporate Safety Assessment, and Environmental Audits, and track corrective actions and monitor trends.

  • Conduct required sampling for environmental requirements.

  • Develop, implement and enforce site specific programs to maintain compliance with laws, codes and regulations.

  • Coordinate reporting, tracking, and trend analysis of health and safety incidents as well as workplace injuries and illnesses.

  • Provide input to management to set short (annual) and long term (3-5 year) goals for safety and health system improvements which include suitable reductions in injury, illness and incidents.

  • Reviews and analyzes environmental documents issued by various regulatory agencies. Determines impact on company operations and communicates data to appropriate engineering personnel for use in making engineering decisions. May communicate compliance strategies and requirements.

  • Evaluates proposed regulations to determine financial, industrial, public and environmental impact.

  • Interacts with federal, state, and local regulators to resolve environmental compliance issues; establishes permit requirements and assists in EPA, state, and local regulatory audits.

  • Provides value added services and is accountable for achieving compliance to the Corning safety policy and for the implementation of the Corning safety strategy improvement initiatives.

Hours of Work/ Schedule

M-F 8-5, including off-hour, weekend, and holiday hours as needed to support 24/7 manufacturing operation.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering or Science, or a related field of study, or related experience

  • 1+ years of EHS experience in a manufacturing setting

  • Knowledge of OSHA/EPA and other relevant regulations and standards

  • Excellent problem-solving skills (DMAIC, DESGN)

  • Excellent social skills and leading teams in a collaborative environment

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent presentation skills

  • Effective management of competing priorities based on risk

  • Integrating aspects of EHS management into the overall operation of the plant

  • Working knowledge of EHS regulatory programs

  • Strong computer skills with Microsoft Office applications

  • Ability to interpret and communicate regulatory requirements to all levels

  • Knowledge of audit procedures (ISO 14001, Regulatory)

Desired Skills

  • Manufacturing based experience

  • EPA Hazardous Waste and DOT Hazardous Materials Certification

  • Work experience with unionized environment

The range for this position is $56,490.00 - $77,675.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
