Alight Technology Director, Front End Designer in Chicago, Illinois

We're looking for an experienced and profoundly engaged Technology Director, Front end, based in Chicago, IL or virtually, who is motivated to combine the art of design with the art of programming. We're looking for a creative Front end Director that brings fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a Technology Director, you will need to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward. You will work on enterprise projects critical to Alight's needs, most importantly the Alight Design System, with opportunities to create, grow and evolve the Front end strategy, application and management.

The Technology Director, Front End Designer will be responsible for working with the team to implement visual elements that users see and interact within our applications, owning the Alight Design System (ADS) component libraries from conception to application. ​You will be responsible for ensuring the alignment of design and user experience requirements, optimizing web pages for maximum efficiency and maintaining brand consistency across all web pages, among other duties. The Front end development team is required to work in alongside Back-end Developers and Product Designers to ensure all elements of our applications creation are consistent. 

  • Lead the front-end technology team to create engaging, reliable, high-performance digital experiences across Enterprise products via theAlight Design System

  • Work with the technology managers and leads to ensure the team, projects, and systems are working and running as effective as possible

  • Leads the technology conversation in a cross-functional team to translate product, design & business requirements into well-realized deliverables

  • Partner withCreativeDirectors,Design Leads, and product owners to ensure designs, wireframes, and pre-development technical decisions will produce compliant results

  • Serve as a liaison within all teams (content, design, development,softwareengineering, marketing, and UX) driving consistent standards compliant with best practices, applicable laws, and/or relevant digital guidelines

  • Develop, socialize, and foster ongoing prioritized progress towards a roadmap across the digital channels to meet accessibility compliance and inclusion

  • Promotes and supports a culture of compliance, risk avoidance and corporate accountability throughout the organization

  • Be able to explain clearly the accepted compliance, best practices, accessibility standards, WCAG, ATAG, Title III and best in class industry guidelines

  • Manage team members under their purview, including performance review management, career development, and conflict mitigation

  • Responsibilities will include translation of the UI/UX design wireframes to actual code that will produce visual elements of the application

  • Work with the Product designer and bridge the gap between design and technical implementation, taking an active role on both sides and defining how the application looks as well as how it works

  • Determining thestrategy,structure and design of web pages andapplications

  • Ensuring user experience determines designchoices

  • Developing features to enhance the userexperience

  • Striking a balance between functional and aestheticdesign

  • Ensuring design is optimized forsmartphones

  • Building reusable code for futureuseand optimizing for maximum speed andscalability

  • Utilizing a variety of markup languages to write webpages

  • MaintainingADSconsistency throughoutdesign

  • Work with other teams within the business to make sure all visuals arein linewith the product branding

  • Proactively solve problems and review ways to improve business processes, competencies, tools, standards, and best practices

  • Represent the team in all meetings and events required by Products and Alight in general

  • Other duties including, but not limited to, assisting other teams from time to time

  • Strong technical leader capable of motivating the very best Front End Developers.

  • Experience leading, managing and growing Front End talent.

  • Leader capable of creative collaborationswithdesigners andUXarchitects, technical involvement with software engineers, improving deliverables with quality assurance teams, andparticipationwith the business and stakeholders.

  • Strong management and organizational skills in-depth knowledge of accessibility-related guidelines and standards including ADA, WCAG, AODA, DDA, European Accessibility Act.

  • Experience with accessibility evaluations, testing and assisted technologies.

  • Experience with digital channels including mobile, web and kiosk, and potentially physical channels.

  • Consistent upward and downstream communication.

  • Excellent knowledge and understanding ofHTML, CSS andJavascript.

  • Good understanding ofdata exchange concepts (database,api, json, etc..).

  • Understand FE build and package processes, such as webpack and NPM

  • Familiar with best practices in Unit Testing

  • Angular front-enda must, React, Vue experience a plus.

  • Experience working with json and json parsing.

  • Knowledge of cross browser compatibility,components basedweb development, Sass, Typescript.

  • Experience with component-based web development libraries​,Storybook experience a must

  • Proven ability to effectively communicate with others to achieve desired results; must be approachable and open-minded.

  • Strong team interaction with the ability to work with geographically dispersed teams.

  • Able to work under pressure of tight deadlines.

  • A very good eye for detail while safeguarding the big picture.

  • Flexibility and patience in working in a challengingand transformingenvironment

  • 8+ years of industry related experiencewith development projects is required

  • 2+ years of experiencemanaging Front End dev tea incollaborationwith engineering/development and design teams
