About the Department
The Data Science Institute at the University of Chicago was established to support the development of emerging efforts in data science across the University. The staff in the Data Science Institute support the University\'s community of scholars, their shared ideals, and the core values that make the University a singular intellectual destination. Together with the University\'s deans and department chairs, the Data Science Institute provides the opportunities, infrastructure, and resources that encourage our faculty and other scholars to pursue their finest work. We are part of the Physical Sciences Division which includes departments and several interdisciplinary research institutes and centers.
Job Summary
Tech staff is the front line of defense for computer security and oversees all systems engineering/administration needs in the Data Science Institute. The System Administrator II will work in collaboration with other members of Techstaff in the Data Science Institute to serve as a technical resource for faculty, staff and students, and to assist the technical team with all aspects of systems management. The primary role is to learn the operations infrastruc-ture, attend meetings, write basic automations, fix errors and bugs, and assist the senior members of the team with all architecture and administration tasks.
We are looking for an enthusiastic computer systems administrator to join our experienced team. The Systems Administrator II will learn our site\'s utilities and infrastructure, gather data from end users, and respond to re-quests from senior members of our team. The Systems Administrator II will carry out software installations, up-grades, and configurations to the Linux and MacOS operating systems. The Systems Administrator II will monitor and tune systems while performing routine audits and remediation procedures on both workstation and server-class systems.
To ensure success, you should have experience in configuration management, a good working knowledge of basic Linux utilities, the ability to write scripts in Bash and Python, the capacity to learn quickly, and to work in a team setting. A top-class Systems Administrator II will provide valuable support to the team while improving their own systems skills.
Responsibilities
- Assist senior staff with all aspects of computer systems maintenance and administration.
- Works together with personnel to analyze system logs and identifies potential issues with computer systems.
- Performs recovery procedures, scheduling, and backups, and monitors processes.
- Works together with personnel on planning for and installing necessary patches, upgrades, and vendor recommended maintenance for servers and their associated infrastructure (including storage, network, peripheral sub-systems, etc.)
- Collaborates with personnel to configure systems and their components to maximize performance and compatibility while minimizing costs, contention, or inference with other systems.
- Respond to requests from constituents of the department including students, faculty, and staff.
- Maintains complex system and network administration functions. Works with moderate guidance to administer simple systems and assists in the administration of larger systems.
- Installs, configures, and maintains operating system workstations and servers. Performs software installations and upgrades to operating systems and layered software packages. Monitors and tunes the system to achieve optimum performance levels, acquiring higher-level skills in the process.
- Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

- Bachelor\'s degree in computer science or a related field.
Experience:
- Direct work experience with Linux operating systems.
- Knowledge of basic software development practices and principles.
- Ability to perform software installations, configuration, and upgrades.
- Working knowledge of common enterprise communication and management platforms.
- Experience managing networked servers and workstations with knowledge of TCP/IP network services.
- Experience with system utilities, installation of hardware, and installation of Operating Systems.
- Experience in a multi-platform network environment including client support, backup and restore technologies, Macintosh and Linux communication software support, and various graphical user interfaces.
