As an airline, safety is our most important principle. And our Corporate Safety team is responsible for making sure safety is top of mind in every action we take. From conducting flight safety investigations and educating pilots on potential safety threats to implementing medical programs and helping prevent employee injuries, our team is instrumental in running a safe and successful airline for our customers and employees.

Key Responsibilities:

The overall objective with having a Senior Manager of SMS Standards is driven by a need for a more effective and efficient Safety Management System (SMS), that continues to evolve from a regulatory perspective in a highly complex operating environment where hazards and risks are also evolving. This role would help set standards for a more effective and efficient SMS while expanding the overall scope and scale of United’s SMS, through expansion efforts. This role would also take on a standardized approach to Root Cause Analysis at United airlines.

  • Responsible for establishing key SMS policies and procedures, SMS standards, minimum requirements, and educational resources in support of our SMS Program at United

  • Responsible for standardizing SMS and RCA workflows and procedures across all operating groups

  • Partner with Global Learning and Operating groups to establish SMS and RCA training content while monitoring compliance and effectiveness of our training programs.

  • Responsible for managing the portfolio of strategic SMS efforts, such as SMS expansion, SMS training, and Root-Cause-Analysis, and Mitigation Effectiveness

  • Responsible for establishing a strategy and standards for new SMS regulations that impact United, such as Airport regulations.

  • Communicate and share updates with senior leadership and key collaborators

  • Role will require some domestic and international travel

What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, aviation safety, safety science, engineering, project management, or another relevant fields of study or equivalent experience

  • 5+ years experience in the aviation industry with SMS related or equivalent safety experience

  • 2+ years experience in a leadership/supervisory role preferred

  • Experience with FAA Safety Management Systems (SMS)

  • An understanding of Federal Aviation Regulations (14 CFR Part 5 and Part 121), FAA Advisory Circulars, IOSA and Standards and Recommended Practices, ISO 9001 standards, Commercial Aviation Safety Team (CAST) Safety Enhancements and documentation standards

  • Ability to study/understand business needs, then design strategic plans and initiatives to solve those business needs

  • Ability to prepare presentations for senior leadership and interact with all levels of management

  • Strong analytical, project management and communication skills. While also comfortable working with large complex datasets.

  • 3-4 years working with complex projects, with a strong emphasis on using safety data for decision making
