How does this role contribute to our collective success?

As a Renewable Energy Engineer, you will work closely with underwriters, project developers, investors, asset manufactures and related parties to enhance AXIS’ role as a risk partner to clients by providing risk management advice and services. This may take a variety of forms, including on-site project assessments and technical advisory services, formal and informal support of underwriters in the assessment of renewable energy risks, the delivery of thought leadership articles, and other strategic and day-to-day consultative and advisory services.

The ideal candidate for this role will have a professional background in renewable energy, hold a degree in mechanical, aerospace, chemical or electrical engineering, and have a desire to work in and learn about emerging trends and marketplace developments in the U.S. renewable energy industry. There will be a specific focus on green hydrogen production facilities in the US which AXIS may be asked to insure. The candidate must be capable of analysing and explaining those trends through a variety of forums, including in-person training sessions, broker and client meetings, seminars and conferences, white papers, etc. This role will report to the US Renewable Energy Principal Engineer with additional leadership guidance and support from the Head of Engineering, Renewable Energy.

What will you do in this role?

  • Support AXIS Global Energy Resilience's US onshore renewables team by providing technical guidance on all submissions in the North American and LatAm portfolio (wind, solar, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), green hydrogen & other emergent low carbon technologies)

  • With support from the global engineering team, create internal best practice guidelines for new and emerging technologies (green hydrogen, gravity storage, floating wind)

  • Maintaining a knowledge base of relevant developments in technology, underwriting, compliance, and market updates to assist in informed underwriting decisions and feed into our risk pricing

  • Assist the US Renewable Energy Principal Engineer with site visits and surveys to identify risk and suggest improvements to insured sites

  • Reviewing, interpreting, and summarizing third-party technical risk information for the AXIS underwriting team to achieve preferable risk selection

  • Maintaining databases and creating data visualizations for the use of the global renewable engineering department

  • Working in tandem with global engineering team and external partners to develop industry leading research, reports and other media that help enhance the AXIS Renewables brand and reputation for market-leading underwriting expertise and risk mitigation services

  • Preparing and delivering briefings and presentations to colleagues and members of our broker and underwriting network on project and technology specific issues and risks, to develop AXIS’s reputation as a centre of excellence for renewable energy underwriting

About You:

What you need to have:

  • ­Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical, chemical or electrical engineering or a relevant scientific discipline

  • Minimum 0-3 years of work experience in operation, research, development, or construction of renewable energy projects

  • Background in renewable energy systems and power generation

  • Highly motivated self-starter who can quickly assess marketplace opportunities and analyze and assess those opportunities for the benefit of AXIS and its clients

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications (Outlook, Word, Excel and Powerpoint)

  • Experience with database management and analyzing large data sets (SQL, Access, PowerBI)

  • Ability to write concise reports that highlight findings and recommendations

  • Strong public speaker who displays confidence when engaging with various external and internal stakeholders, clients, and prospects

  • Ability to multi-task, manage conflicting priorities, and work with an international team in various time zones

What we prefer you to have:

  • Background in wind energy, BESS and/or green hydrogen a plus

  • Underwriting experience and/or relevant insurance qualifications is beneficial;

Role Factors:

In this role, you will typically be required to:

Travel up to 20% domestically

US driver’s license is required

Be able to travel to remote areas and climb wind turbine towers (up to 100 meters)

Individual must be able to obtain climb certification and work at heights (Global Wind Organisation)

Potential international travel

This position is remote, but if the candidate desires to be in office (Chicago or New York) be in the office 3 days per week

What we offer:

For this position, we currently expect to offer a base salary in the range of 120-135k (NY), 100-115k (GA), 110-125k (IL), 115-130k (NJ). Your salary offer will be based on an assessment of a variety of factors including your specific experience and work location.

In addition, you will be offered competitive target incentive compensation, with awards based on overall corporate and individual performance.
