UChicagoGRAD works with academic departments and divisions as well as campus-wide offices to develop and implement outreach, recruitment, and yield efforts; graduate and postdoc-focused programs, workshops, and events; training and support tailored to UChicago graduate students and postdocs; and administrative practices and policies in support of graduate education.

Job Summary

The job performs routine assignments related to University labor and employee relations.

Responsibilities

  • Provides essential administrative and logistical support for the implementation and ongoing administration of the University\'s collective bargaining agreement with the Graduate Students United - United Electrical Works (GSU-UE).
  • Communicates with staff who post union-eligible jobs to the UChicagoGRAD jobs board; reviews and approves job posts to ensure compliance with contractual requirements and student employment policies.
  • Supports all quarterly processes related to contract-mandated additional student payments, dues collection, review of union membership and agency fee collector lists, provision of bargaining unit list to the union, and communication efforts with students who have FERPA directory blocks.
  • Assists in gathering information in order to responds to internal and union requests for information and data; works with units across the University to gather data and information to support requests.
  • Supports development of new initiatives in service of contract implementation.
  • As part of the UChicagoGRAD team, participates in the continueddevelopment and implementation of University-wide supportive resources that create community and contribute to the academic and professional success of graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
  • Supports labor negotiations by making logistical arrangements for bargaining sessions; attends bargaining sessions to serve as note-taker and to ensure the proper maintenance of the negotiation record through the tracking of proposals and agreements and the recording of the table discussion.
  • Supports the grievance, arbitration and NLRB case management efforts by coordinating meetings; researching issues; gathers information necessary for grievance meetings, arbitration hearings and NLRB hearings, working closely with in-house and outside University advocates as needed. Maintains ELR electronic and paper records including tank files, the ELR Work Tracker and paper files.
  • Serves as initial point of contact for employee complaints (take phone calls or emails and contact complainants to determine nature of complaint, what unit and who may be involved). Has limited authority and may directly answers client and employee inquiries received in the ELR e-mail inbox.
  • Participates in labor negotiations by coordinatin schedules, securing rooms, and making logistical arrangements for bargaining sessions; attends bargaining sessions to serve as note-taker and to ensure the proper maintenance of the negotiation record through the tracking of proposals and agreements and the recording of the table discussion.
  • Performs other related work as needed.
