Job Description Summary

The General Counsel, Digital provides strategic legal partnership and advice to the GE HealthCare Digital business. The specific focus of this role includes counseling the GE HealthCare Digital business on: (i) enterprise-wide digital optimization and transformation, including the development of digital tools and applications, SaaS and cloud-based technologies, data governance, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML); (ii) digital product development, licensing opportunities and external partnerships and collaborations. This role reports to the GE HealthCare General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, with a dotted line to the Chief Science and Clinical Technology Officer.

GE HealthCare Digital is leveraging the potential of data and analytics to bring our customers actionable insights across healthcare systems and care pathways, enabling better clinical, operational and financial outcomes.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Working with the GE HealthCare Digital leadership team as an active business partner to identify strategic opportunities to drive growth, including through digital transformation, analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), data science, cloud-deployment, software-as-a-service (SaaS) and data strategy.

  • Providing legal advice for new and developing digital business and commercial models as technology, regulations, and markets evolve.

  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating strategic business agreements and transactions, including inbound and outbound technology licensing, data acquisition, software development, cloud deployment, professional services and clinical collaborations.

  • Advising the GE HealthCare Digital business on improper payments (e.g., AKS, FCPA), regulatory, data privacy, cybersecurity, data governance, competition/antitrust, and advertising/promotional matters.

  • Providing regulatory and compliance advice and training in conjunction with the Regulatory and Compliance specialist areas.

  • Managing outside counsel as necessary.

  • In collaboration with GE HealthCare Chief Litigation and Investigations Counsel, managing disputes, litigation and incidents involving Digital products and projects.

  • Applying business and legal judgment to proposed transactions, relationships, and other issues requiring legal or compliance attention.

  • Supporting business development, acquisition/disposition and licensing activities impacting the GE HealthCare Digital business.

  • Designing and conducting impactful communication and training programs to drive employee awareness about key issues and compliance initiatives in GE HealthCare Digital.

  • Collaborating with regional legal colleagues and subject matters experts to analyze and advise on complex legal/compliance issues arising out of GE HealthCare Digital’s global operations.

  • Leading the GE HealthCare Digital legal team (both direct and indirect team members); hiring and developing the team, with potential to grow along with the GE HealthCare Digital business.

Qualifications and Experience :

  • JD (or global equivalent) with active bar membership.

  • 10+ years of business/healthcare law experience at a large law firm or corporate legal department, including relevant previous experience in the areas of digital transformation, strategy and product development.

  • Proven track record of project and process development, implementation, and project management.

  • Proven ability to lead and function as a member of a global team in a complex, matrix environment.

  • Demonstrated experience identifying and resolving legal and regulatory issues quickly and effectively, with an ability to make real-time decisions.

  • Demonstrated experience prioritizing conflicting demands from multiple business clients in an extremely fast-paced environment.

  • Experience of the healthcare industry and previous exposure to medical industry regulations (FDA, Medicare/Medicaid, anti-kickback).

  • Demonstrated experience providing legal advice in a highly regulated environment.

Desired:

  • Knowledge of and experience in the medical device and/or pharmaceutical industry, particularly research and digitally related matters.

  • Excellent influencing skills combined with an ability to build strong working relationships within a matrix environment.

  • Advanced communication skills - both written and verbal.

  • Demonstrated ability to think and lead on a strategic level within a complex organization

  • Ability to deal effectively with people and work in diverse teams, sometimes virtually located.

  • Level-headed approach to risk and managing such risk against business objectives.
