EPIDEMIOLOGIST IV

Starting Salary: $103,176

The position applies high level analytical methods and techniques to support activities of the Healthcare and Congregate Settings Program. As a leadership member of the CDPH Epidemiologist team in the Healthcare and Congregate Settings Program, the EPIDEMIOLOGIST IV performs advanced research and analysis of congregate settings data, including acute care hospitals, long term acute care hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, dialysis centers, outpatient facilities, shelters, correctional facilities, and schools.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Planning & Analysis.

Analyzes surveillance data to track cases and outbreaks within healthcare facilities and other congregate settings (e.g., prevalence, incidence, epidemic curves, risk factors for various populations), with a specific focus on multidrug resistant organisms (MDROs). Oversees collection and reporting of laboratory and case reporting data. Guides team epidemiologists in uses of various software programs (e.g., SAS, ArcGIS) to generate data summaries, tables, charts, and graphic displays or to perform difficult manipulation of data. Reviews and contributes to the design and quality improvement of data collection tools for laboratory and epidemiological data. Identifies methods to improve congregate facility response and facility-based outbreak monitoring, conducting observational epidemiologic studies and researching information from federal, state, and local health agencies. Evaluates disease intervention programs and recommends program changes to mitigate transmission and improve outcomes within high-risk populations.

Subject Matter Expert.

Strong analytical skills and experience with SAS and other analytic tools. Proficiency in programming and analysis using SAS as well as, Excel, PowerPoint and Word. Experience in survey design and contact tracing tools such as REDCap, Salesforce, Epi Info. Ability to read and interpret such documents as clinical laboratory test results, technical reports, ability to utilize computers and applications. Basic knowledge of laboratory methods and field operations. Prepares presentations and reports to communicate insights from data and analyses to diverse audiences, including members of the public and the scientific community.

Management.

This role supervises the Healthcare and Congregate Settings Program Epidemiologists and provides guidance for their research. Reviews reports prepared by team epidemiologists for review by CDPH leadership. Identifies training needs for Epidemiologist team. Supports development and writing of program-specific protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Supports grant writing, monitoring and reporting of grant deliverables.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in Public Health, Statistics, Mathematics, or a directly related field. Concentration in Epidemiology, preferred.

• At least five years of experience performing epidemiological and statistical analysis work or disease prevention and control

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ATTRIBUTES, AND ABILITIES

 Professional or technical experience in epidemiology, biostatistics, or bioinformatics.

 Background in quantitative analysis and surveillance methodologies.

 Considerable knowledge of:

o statistical computer software packages and applications

o epidemiological research and analytical practices and procedures

 Moderate knowledge of:

o public health care trends, issues, programs, and services

o applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and guidelines

o medical terminology

 In-depth expertise in the development of comprehensive planning programs.

 Comprehensive understanding of public health administration.

 Adept at using computers and new software.

PREFERENCE CRITERIA

 Subject matter expertise in infectious disease epidemiology, surveillance, and familiarity with informatics. Preferred that work experience is post MPH degree.

• Intermediate to advanced SAS coding experience

 Experience in publishing in peer reviewed journals and poster or oral presentations at scientific conferences.

 Experience with supervision of staff.

 Experience in public health at local and federal level.

 Experience in public health responses in the field.

 Familiar with healthcare systems and healthcare administration in acute and post-acute settings.

 Experience with researching and compiling grant proposals, grant monitoring and reporting.

 Experience working on both infectious and non-infectious diseases.

 Technical skills with other database management and analytic software: Epi Info, R, and SQL.

This position is funded by a federal grant. These funds may be extended, but CDPH cannot guarantee this position will be funded past July 2027.
